@article{fdi:010068341, title = {{N}ew insights on the upper layer circulation north of the {G}ulf of {G}uinea}, author = {{H}erbert, {G}a{\¨e}lle and {B}ourl{\`e}s, {B}ernard and {P}enven, {P}ierrick and {G}relet, {J}acques}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he oceanic circulation in the upper layers of the north of the {G}ulf of {G}uinea is analyzed, as inferred from in situ observations and numerical simulations. {T}his particular region, in spite of the presence of a coastal upwelling and its impact on resources and regional climate, is still poorly documented. {C}ruises carried out in the framework of different international programs (e.g., {EGEE}/{AMMA}, {PIRATA}) allowed to show the existence of an eastward flowing undercurrent, found under the {G}uinea {C}urrent, named the {G}uinea {U}nder{C}urrent ({GUC}). {N}umerical results from high resolution simulation allowed the description of the seasonal variability of this current. {I}t appears that the {GUC} is stronger in spring and reverses westward in {A}ugust-{S}eptember. {W}e also depict the fate and the sources of the {GUC} based on selected trajectories from numerical particle tracking. {T}he simulated trajectories reveal: (i) a preferred route of the {GUC} along 4 degrees {N} from {C}ape {P}almas to {C}ape {T}hree {P}oints and following the coast east of {C}ape {T}hree {P}oints; (ii) strong recirculations in the most eastern part of the {G}ulf of {G}uinea and off {C}ape {P}almas including warm and salty waters of the {S}outh {E}quatorial {C}urrent; (iii) a weak inflow from northern latitudes through a subsurface current flowing southward along the {W}est {A}frican coast. {I}n addition, {L}agrangian experiments show that the {GUC} is not an extension of the {N}orth {E}quatorial {U}nder{C}urrent and confirm that this current does not penetrate into the {G}ulf of {G}uinea.}, keywords = {{G}ulf of {G}uinea ; {G}uinea {U}nder{C}urrent ; {L}agrangian analysis ; {AFRIQUE} {DE} {L}'{OUEST} ; {ATLANTIQUE} ; {GUINEE} {GOLFE} ; {ZONE} {TROPICALE} ; {ZONE} {EQUATORIALE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of {G}eophysical {R}esearch : {O}ceans}, volume = {121}, numero = {9}, pages = {6793--6815}, ISSN = {2169-9275}, year = {2016}, DOI = {10.1002/2016jc011959}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010068341}, }
