(2001, 2003) who documented the properties of a {N}atal {P}ulse using isopycnal {L}agrangian floats. {W}e combined {L}agrangian analyses and {E}ulerian maps derived from objective analysis to better describe the evolution of a {N}atal {P}ulse along three density surfaces referred to as the surface (satellite-observed), shallow (isopycnal 1026.8 kg m(-3)), and deep (isopycnal 1027.2 kg m(-3)) layer. {O}ur observations show that this {N}atal {P}ulse extended to a depth of 1000 m and was associated with cyclonic relative vorticity values of about 6.5-8.5 x 10(-5) s(-1) in the surface and shallow layer and 4 x 10(-5) s(-1) in the deep layer. {T}his {N}atal {P}ulse contributed to cross-shelf exchange through the offshore advection of {E}astern {A}gulhas {B}ank water near the surface, onshore advection of {S}outh {I}ndian {C}entral {W}ater and/or {I}ndian {E}quatorial {W}ater in the shallow layer, and {A}ntarctic {I}ntermediate {W}ater in the deep layer. {S}ea surface temperature maps showed that the downstream progression of the {N}atal {P}ulse along the 3000 m isobath was related to a readjustment of its rotation axis. {T}his readjustment advected {E}astern {A}gulhas {B}ank water into the {N}atal {P}ulse eddy and triggered a {SST} cooling of about 3 degrees {C} in the cyclonic area. {T}he importance of a warm recirculating {A}gulhas plume originating from the {N}atal {P}ulse was highlighted. {T}his warm water plume extended to a depth of 700 m and was associated with onshore velocities exceeding those experienced within the {N}atal {P}ulse eddy by a factor of 2. {O}ur observations indicate that the {J}une/{J}uly 1998 {N}atal {P}ulse and its associated plumes enhanced cross-shelf exchanges.}, keywords = {{A}gulhas {C}urrent ; {N}atal {P}ulse ; {L}agrangian floats ; {AFRIQUE} {DU} {SUD} ; {OCEAN} {INDIEN} ; {OCEAN} {AUSTRAL} ; {AGULHAS} {COURANT}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of {G}eophysical {R}esearch : {O}ceans}, volume = {121}, numero = {9}, pages = {7108--7122}, ISSN = {2169-9275}, year = {2016}, DOI = {10.1002/2015jc011582}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010068337}, }
