@article{fdi:010068305, title = {{E}xploring the potential effects of marine protected areas on the ecosystem structure of the {G}ulf of {G}abes using the {E}cospace model}, author = {{A}bdou, {K}. and {H}alouani, {G}. and {H}attab, {T}. and {R}omdhane, {M}. {S}. and {L}asram, {F}. {B}. and {L}e {L}oc'h, {F}ran{\c{c}}ois}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he {G}ulf of {G}abes is considered as one of the most productive areas of the southern {M}editerranean {S}ea and it plays an important role in {T}unisian economy. {I}t is known to be an archetypal ecosystem in which the effects of fisheries are the most pronounced. {B}ased on the stock assessment outcomes, it is as a highly exploited ecosystem. {T}hereupon, it becomes necessary to establish adequate measures to facilitate the recovery of the marine resources. {T}he most important sets of management measures regard the establishment of {M}arine {P}rotected {A}reas ({MPA}s). {H}owever, these management plans should be assessed beforehand to make sure of the relevance of the measure and its impact on marine resources. {M}odeling may significantly enhance our understanding of the likely impacts of fisheries management plans on groups that are very difficult to study and this approach gives insights at larger spatial scales. {W}e used {E}cospace to investigate the potential impacts of several spatial management plans on the ecosystem structure of the {G}ulf of {G}abes. {T}he {E}cospace model is based on the existing {E}copath model elaborated by {H}attab (2013). {T}he simulation were carried over a 15-year period. {T}he outcomes of the simulations, suggest that the implementation of {MPA}s in the {G}ulf of {G}abes could be simultaneously beneficial for the ecosystem and fishing activities. {H}owever, the benefits are related to the characteristics of the {MPA}. {T}he spatial simulations highlight that the location is crucial to the success of the {MPA}. {A}dditionally, an increase in the size of a {MPA} can result in an increase in the spillover effect and, consequently, in catches in the neighborhood without harming ecosystem integrity. {T}he configuration of the implemented {MPA} is of capital importance, a set of many small {MPA}s is more beneficial than fewer and larger {MPA}s, especially in terms of catches.}, keywords = {{E}cospace ; {G}ulf of {G}abes ; fisheries management ; marine protected areas ({MPA}) ; {TUNISIE} ; {MEDITERRANNEE} ; {GABES} {GOLFE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{A}quatic {L}iving {R}esources}, volume = {29}, numero = {2}, pages = {art. 202 [18 p.]}, ISSN = {0990-7440}, year = {2016}, DOI = {10.1051/alr/2016014}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010068305}, }
