@article{fdi:010068280, title = {{P}athways and water mass properties of the thermocline and intermediate waters in the {S}olomon {S}ea}, author = {{G}ermineaud, {C}. and {G}anachaud, {A}lexandre and {S}printall, {J}. and {C}ravatte, {S}ophie and {E}ldin, {G}{\'e}rard and {A}lberty, {M}. {S}. and {P}rivat, {E}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he semienclosed {S}olomon {S}ea is the final passage in the equatorward transit of the {S}outh {P}acific western boundary currents ({WBC}s) that play a key role in heat and mass budgets of the equatorial {P}acific. {T}he {S}olomon {WBC}s and their associated water properties are examined using data from two oceanographic cruises undertaken during the contrasting trade wind seasons: {J}uly 2012 and {M}arch 2014. {T}he mean circulation and associated transports with uncertainties is determined from the cruise data using a unique configuration of an inverse box model formulated based on measured shipboard acoustic {D}oppler current profiler velocities. {A}n intense inflow of 36 {S}v is found entering the {S}olomon {S}ea in {J}uly-{A}ugust 2012 that falls by 70% to 11 {S}v in {M}arch 2014. {L}arge differences are also found in the total transport partitioning through each of the major exit passages during each season. {D}ifferent water masses are found in the {WBC} stream northeast of the {S}olomon {I}slands that are likely related to a northern stream of the {S}outh {E}quatorial {C}urrent. {W}ithin the {S}olomon {S}ea, isopycnal salinity gradients are gradually stronger than within the subtropical {P}acific, likely induced by stronger diapycnal mixing processes. {WBC} pathways exhibit distinct water mass signatures in salinity, oxygen, and nutrients that can be traced across the {S}olomon {S}ea, associated with significant water mass modifications at the northern exit straits and south of the {W}oodlark {I}sland.}, keywords = {{PACIFIQUE} ; {SALOMON} {MER} ; {ZONE} {EQUATORIALE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of {P}hysical {O}ceanography}, volume = {46}, numero = {10}, pages = {3031--3049}, ISSN = {0022-3670}, year = {2016}, DOI = {10.1175/jpo-d-16-0107.1}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010068280}, }
