@article{fdi:010068223, title = {{M}eteorological conditions, seasonal and annual mass balances of {C}hhota {S}higri {G}lacier, western {H}imalaya, {I}ndia}, author = {{A}zam, {M}. {F}. and {R}amanathan, {A}. and {W}agnon, {P}atrick and {V}incent, {C}. and {L}inda, {A}. and {B}erthier, {E}. and {S}harma, {P}. and {M}andal, {A}. and {A}ngchuk, {T}. and {S}ingh, {V}. {B}. and {P}ottakkal, {J}. {G}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{W}e present the updated glaciological mass balance ({MB}) of {C}hhota {S}higri {G}lacier, the longest continuous annual {MB} record in the {H}indu-{K}ush {K}arakoram {H}imalaya ({HKH}) region. {A}dditionally, 4 years of seasonal {MB}s are presented and analyzed using the data acquired at an automatic weather station ({AWS}-{M}) installed in 2009 on a lateral moraine (4863ma.s.l.). {T}he glaciological {MB} series since 2002 is first recalculated using an updated glacier hypsometry and then validated against geodetic {MB} derived from satellite stereo-imagery between 2005 ({SPOT}5) and 2014 ({P}leiades). {C}hhota {S}higri {G}lacier lost mass between 2002 and 2014 with a cumulative glaciological {MB} of -6.72 m w. e. corresponding to a mean annual glacier-wide {MB} ({B}-a) of -0.56m w. e. a(-1). {E}quilibriumline altitude ({ELA}(0)) for the steady-state condition is calculated as similar to 4950 m a.s.l., corresponding to an accumulation-area ratio ({AAR}(0)) of similar to 61%. {A}nalysis of seasonal {MB}s between 2009 and 2013 with air temperature from {AWS}-{M} and precipitation from the nearest meteorological station at {B}huntar (1050 m a.s.l.) suggests that the summer monsoon is the key season driving the interannual variability of {B}a for this glacier. {T}he intensity of summer snowfall events controls the {B}-a evolution via controlling summer glacier-wide {MB} ({B}-s).}, keywords = {accumulation ; glacier mass balance ; glacier meteorology ; mountain ; glaciers ; {INDE} ; {HIMALAYA} ; {CHHOTA} {SHIGRI} {GLACIER}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{A}nnals of {G}laciology}, volume = {57}, numero = {71}, pages = {328--338}, ISSN = {0260-3055}, year = {2016}, DOI = {10.3189/2016{A}o{G}71{A}570}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010068223}, }
