  abstract = {{P}rehistoric {R}esearch in {L}aos was initiated during the {F}rench {I}ndochinese period. {D}isrupted by unstable geopolitics, {L}aotian teams started to revisit prehistoric cave sites and rock shelters in the early 2000s. {I}nternational interest in {L}aotian prehistory resumed in 2005 with a prehistoric survey of {N}orthern {L}aos focusing more especially, on ancient period (pre-) {H}oabinhian lithic techno-complex but also, more recently on rock art along the {M}ekong river banks. {T}he purpose of this paper is not to discuss the periods classically referred to as "recent prehistory" by authors, which generally spans from the {N}eolithic through to {M}etal ages and sometimes even historical times. {R}ather, we provide a retrospective on prehistoric investigations, in {L}aos to date, independently of periods, with the main focus on stone tools. {N}ew perspectives for prehistoric research in this widely under-explored country are briefly discussed.},
