@article{fdi:010068182, title = {{T}he palaeoenvironmental context of the {P}alaeolithic of {J}ava : a brief review}, author = {{S}{\'e}mah, {A}nne-{M}arie and {S}{\'e}mah, {F}. and {M}oigne, {A}. {M}. and {I}ngicco, {T}. and {P}urnomo, {A}. and {S}imanjuntak, {T}. and {W}idianto, {H}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he earliest {P}alaeolithic implements found in {J}ava {I}sland are older than 1 {M}a, postdating the oldest {H}omo erectus fossils. {T}he archaeological record subsequently documents {A}cheulean-like tools in early {M}iddle {P}leistocene deposits, a diversity of flake tools assemblages found in late {M}iddle/early {U}pper {P}leistocene sites, and the conspicuous development of cave occupations during the end of the {P}leistocene and the early {H}olocene. {T}he environment, mostly forested during the {L}ower {P}leistocene, underwent important changes during the setup of {M}id-{P}leistocene climatic conditions, then at the beginning of the {U}pper {P}leistocene and at the boundary between {MIS} 2 and 1. {I}ts reconstructions must also consider more local factors, e.g. the repetitive effects of the tectonic and volcanic activities, which had severe consequences on local climate, on the palaeogeography and the vegetal formations, or even isolation of faunistic and floristic groups. {E}xamples presented here broach the context of ancient human settlements and adaptation, from a multidisciplinary viewpoint that includes the study of the vegetal cover and the availability of lithic raw material. {T}he associated vertebrate faunas, considered both as an environmental proxy and as a subsistence resource, reflect the contrasts between periods of contact with the mainland (increased biodiversity) and periods of isolation favouring endemism, and also the impact of local environmental constraints.}, keywords = {{P}alaeoenvironment ; {J}ava ; {H}omo erectus ; {P}aleolithic ; {A}cheulean ; {INDONESIE} ; {JAVA}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{Q}uaternary {I}nternational}, volume = {416}, numero = {}, pages = {38--45}, ISSN = {1040-6182}, year = {2016}, DOI = {10.1016/j.quaint.2015.11.026}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010068182}, }
