@article{fdi:010068149, title = {{P}hytoplankton community structure in the {VAHINE} mesocosm experiment}, author = {{L}eblanc, {K}. and {C}ornet, {V}. and {C}affin, {M}. and {R}odier, {M}artine and {D}esnues, {A}nne and {B}erthelot, {H}. and {T}urk-{K}ubo, {K}. and {H}eliou, {J}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he {VAHINE} mesocosm experiment was designed to trigger a diazotroph bloom and to follow the subsequent transfer of diazotroph-derived nitrogen ({DDN}) in the rest of the food web. {T}hree mesocosms (50m(3)) located inside the {N}oumea lagoon ({N}ew {C}aledonia, southwestern {P}acific) were enriched with dissolved inorganic phosphorus ({DIP}) in order to promote {N}-2 fixation in these low-nutrient, low-chlorophyll ({LNLC}) waters. {I}nitially, the diazotrophic community was dominated by diatom diazotroph associations ({DDA}s), mainly by {R}hizosolenia/{R}ichelia intracellularis, and by {T}richodesmium, which fueled enough {DDN} to sustain the growth of other diverse diatom species and {S}ynechococcus populations that were well adapted to limiting {DIP} levels. {A}fter {DIP} fertilization (1 mu {M}) on day 4, an initial lag time of 10 days was necessary for the mesocosm ecosystems to start building up biomass. {H}owever, changes in community structure were already observed during this first period, with a significant drop of both {S}ynechococcus and diatom populations, while {P}rochlorococcus benefited from {DIP} addition. {A}t the end of this first period, corresponding to when most added {DIP} was consumed, the diazotroph community changed drastically and became dominated by {C}yanothece-like ({UCYN}-{C}) populations, which were accompanied by a monospecific bloom of the diatom {C}ylindrotheca closterium. {D}uring the second period, biomass increased sharply together with primary production and {N}-2-fixation fluxes near tripled. {D}iatom populations, as well as {S}ynechococcus and nanophytoeukaryotes, showed a re-increase towards the end of the experiment, showing efficient transfer of {DDN} to nondiazotrophic phytoplankton.}, keywords = {{NOUVELLE} {CALEDONIE} ; {NOUMEA} {LAGON} ; {PACIFIQUE} {SUD} {OUEST}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{B}iogeosciences}, volume = {13}, numero = {18}, pages = {5205--5219}, ISSN = {1726-4170}, year = {2016}, DOI = {10.5194/bg-13-5205-2016}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010068149}, }
