@article{fdi:010067971, title = {{T}race elements in two odontocete species ({K}ogia breviceps and {G}lobicephala macrorhynchus) stranded in {N}ew {C}aledonia ({S}outh {P}acific)}, author = {{B}ustamante, {P}. and {G}arrigue, {C}laire and {B}reau, {L}udovic and {C}aurant, {F}. and {D}abin, {W}. and {G}reaves, {J}. and {D}odemont, {R}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{L}iver, muscle and blubber tissues of two short-finned pilot whales ({G}lobicephala macrorhynchus) and two pygmy sperm whales ({K}ogia breviceps) stranded on the coast of {N}ew {C}aledonia have been analysed for 12 trace elements ({A}l, {C}d, {C}o, {C}r, {C}u, {F}e, organic and total {H}g, {M}n, {N}i, {S}e, {V}, and {Z}n). {L}iver was shown to be the most important accumulating organ for {C}d, {C}u, {F}e, {H}g, {S}e, and {Z}n in both species, {G}. macrorhynchus having the highest {C}d, {H}g, {S}e and {Z}n levels. {I}n this species, concentrations of total {H}g are particularly elevated, reaching up to 1452 μg g−1 dry wt. {O}nly a very low percentage of the total {H}g was organic. {I}n both species, the levels of {H}g are directly related to {S}e in liver. {T}hus, a molar ratio of {H}g:{S}e close to 1.0 was found for all specimens, except for the youngest {K}. breviceps. {O}ur results suggest that {G}. macrorhynchus have a physiology promoting the accumulation of high levels of naturally occurring toxic elements. {F}urthermore, concentrations of {N}i, {C}r and {C}o are close to or below the detection limit in the liver and muscles of all specimens. {T}his suggests that mining activity in {N}ew {C}aledonia, which typically elevates the levels of these contaminants in the marine environment, does not seem to be a significant source of contamination for these pelagic marine mammals.}, keywords = {{H}eavy metals ; {C}admium ; {M}ercury ; {N}ickel ; {M}arine mammals ; {P}acific {O}cean ; {NOUVELLE}-{CALEDONIE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{E}nvironmental {P}ollution}, volume = {124}, numero = {2}, pages = {263--271}, year = {2003}, DOI = {10.1016/{S}0269-7491(02)00480-3}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010067971}, }
