@article{fdi:010067758, title = {{I}nfluence of {S}outh {A}merica orography on summertime precipitation in {S}outheastern {S}outh {A}merica [+{E}rratum]}, author = {{J}unquas, {C}l{\'e}mentine and {L}i, {L}. and {V}era, {C}. {S}. and {L}e {T}reut, {H}. and {T}akahashi, {K}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{I}mpacts of the main {S}outh {A}merican orographic structures (the {A}ndes, the {B}razilian {P}lateau and the {G}uiana shield) on the regional climate and associated global teleconnection are investigated through numerical experiments in which some of these features are suppressed. {S}imulations are performed with a "two-way nesting" system coupling interactively the regional and global versions of the {LMDZ}4 atmospheric general circulation model. {A}t regional scale, the simulations confirm previous studies, showing that both the {A}ndes and the {B}razilian {P}lateau exert a control on the position and strength of the {S}outh {A}tlantic convergence zone ({SACZ}), mainly through their impact on the low-level jet and the coastal branch of the subtropical anticyclones. {T}he northern topography of {S}outh {A}merica appears to be crucial to determine the leading mode of rainfall variability in eastern {S}outh {A}merica, which manifests itself as a dipole-like pattern between {S}outheastern {S}outh {A}merica and the {SACZ} region. {T}he suppression of {S}outh {A}merica orography also shows global-scale effects, corresponding to an adjustment of the global circulation system. {C}hanges in atmospheric circulation and precipitation are found in remote areas on the globe, being the consequences of various teleconnection mechanisms. {W}hen the {B}razilian {P}lateau and the {A}ndes are suppressed, there is a decrease of precipitation in the {SACZ} region, associated with a weakening of the large-scale ascendance. {C}hanges are described in terms of anomalies in the {W}alker circulation, meridional displacements of the mid-latitude jet stream, {S}outhern annular mode anomalies and modifications of {R}ossby wave train teleconnection processes.}, keywords = {{S}outh {A}merica orography ; {S}ummer precipitation ; {O}rography influence ; {T}wo-way nesting system ; {G}lobal teleconnection processes ; {AMERIQUE} {DU} {SUD} ; {ANDES} ; {BRESIL} {PLATEAU} ; {GUYANE} {PLATEAU} ; {BOLIVIE} ; {ARGENTINE} ; {CHILI} ; {URUGUAY} ; {PEROU}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{C}limate {D}ynamics}, volume = {46}, numero = {11-12}, pages = {3941--3963 [+erratum 2016,vol. 47,no 9--10, p. 3889--3890]}, ISSN = {0930-7575}, year = {2016}, DOI = {10.1007/s00382-015-2814-8}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010067758}, }
