@article{fdi:010067337, title = {{A} model-based assesment of reef larvae dispersal in the {W}estern {I}ndian {O}cean reveals regional connectivity patterns : potential implications for conservation policies}, author = {{C}rochelet, {E}. and {R}oberts, {J}. and {L}agabrielle, {E}rwann and {O}bura, {D}. and {P}etit, {M}ichel and {C}habanet, {P}ascale}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{M}arine resources are under increasing pressure from a wide variety of threats such as overfishing, offshore energy development, and climate change. {A}s marine ecosystems degrade, so do the well-being and livelihoods of humans that depend directly on the ecosystem goods and services they provide. {M}arine protected areas have been proposed to protect biodiversity, restore damaged ecosystems, sustain fisheries, and rebuild overexploited stocks. {T}he effectiveness of marine protected areas depends in part on their effectiveness as connected networks, linked over large areas by ecological processes such as larval dispersal. {H}ere, we applied a biophysical model driven by ocean currents derived from satellite altimetry to evaluate connectivity between {W}estern {I}ndian {O}cean reefs. {W}e applied graph-theoretic analysis, including clustering and a betweenness centrality metric. {O}ur results show high interconnectivity within several regions ({M}ozambique {C}hannel, {M}ascarene archipelago) and lower connectivity across the {WIO} region. {W}e compared the results with the current {MPA} network, and proposed sites/reefs that should be considered priority sites for {MPA} implementation: {P}ebane, {C}osmoledo, {M}ajunga, {M}asoarivo, {P}latte {I}sland, {F}arquhar, {A}galega and {G}eyser bank. {O}ur results are timely, considering the oil and gas exploration that is ongoing in the region. {W}e discuss implications for transboundary marine policies and regional cooperation in the {W}estern {I}ndian {O}cean, and advocate the creation of a regional-scale organization to structure interactions among the different actors.}, keywords = {{OCEAN} {INDIEN} ; {MASCAREIGNES} ; {REUNION} ; {MAURICE} ; {MADAGASCAR} ; {MOZAMBIQUE} ; {SEYCHELLES} ; {MOZAMBIQUE} {CANAL}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{R}egional {S}tudies in {M}arine {S}cience}, volume = {7}, numero = {}, pages = {159--167}, ISSN = {2352-4855}, year = {2016}, DOI = {10.1016/j.rsma.2016.06.007}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010067337}, }
