@article{fdi:010067224, title = {{P}artitioning of oblique convergence in the {N}orthern {A}ndes subduction zone : migration history and the present-day boundary of the {N}orth {A}ndean {S}liver in {E}cuador}, author = {{A}lvarado, {A}. and {A}udin, {L}aurence and {N}ocquet, {J}ean-{M}athieu and {J}aillard, {E}tienne and {M}othes, {P}. and {J}arrin, {P}. and {S}egovia, {M}. and {R}olandone, {F}. and {C}isneros, {D}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{A}long the {E}cuadorian margin, oblique subduction induces deformation of the overriding continental plate. {F}or the last 15{M}a, both exhumation and tectonic history of {E}cuador suggest that the northeastward motion of the {N}orth {A}ndean {S}liver ({NAS}) was accompanied by an eastward migration of its eastern boundary and successive progressively narrowing restraining bends. {H}ere we present geologic data, earthquake epicenters, focal mechanisms, {GPS} results, and a revised active fault map consistent with this new kinematic model. {A}ll data sets concur to demonstrate that active continental deformation is presently localized along a single major fault system, connecting fault segments from the {G}ulf of {G}uayaquil to the eastern {A}ndean {C}ordillera. {A}lthough secondary faults are recognized within the {C}ordillera, they accommodate a negligible fraction of relativemotion compared to themain fault system. {T}he eastern limit is then concentrated rather than distributed as first proposed, marking a sharp boundary between the {NAS}, the {I}nca sliver, and the {S}ubandean domain overthrusting the {S}outh {A}merican craton. {T}he {NAS} limit follows a northeast striking right-lateral transpressional strike-slip system from the {G}ulf of {G}uayaquil ({I}sla {P}unĂ¡) to the {A}ndean {C}ordillera and with the north-south striking transpressive faults along the eastern {A}ndes. {E}astward migration of the restraining belt since the {P}liocene, abandonment of the sutures and reactivation of north-south striking ancient fault zones lead to the final development of a major tectonic boundary south and east of the {NAS}, favoring its extrusion as a continental sliver, accommodating the oblique convergence of the {N}azca oceanic plate toward {S}outh {A}merica}, keywords = {{ANDES} ; {EQUATEUR} ; {PACIFIQUE} ; {GUAYAQUIL} {GOLFE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{T}ectonics}, volume = {35}, numero = {}, pages = {1048--1065}, ISSN = {0278-7407}, year = {2016}, DOI = {10.1002/2016{TC}004117}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010067224}, }
