@article{fdi:010067212, title = {{M}orphological variations of wild populations of {N}ile tilapia ({O}reochromis niloticus) living in extreme environmental conditions in the {K}enyan {R}ift-{V}alley}, author = {{N}diwa, {T}.{C}. and {N}yingi, {D}.{W}. and {C}laude, {J}. and {A}gn{\`e}se, {J}ean-{F}ran{\c{c}}ois}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{I}n this study, we use geometric morphometric method to establish morphological differences between natural populations of {N}ile tilapia from two extreme environmental conditions (high temperature and salinity) in {K}enya, and compare them to two populations from regions experiencing less extreme conditions. {T}o determine genetic influence on morphology, we correlated genetic data with morphological data. {T}he study observed significant morphological differences between all studied populations, including three closely related hot spring populations ({B}ogoria, {C}helaba and {T}urtle {S}prings), and two populations with similar genetic background inhabiting saline environments in {L}ake {T}urkana basin ({T}urkana and {C}rocodile {L}ake populations). {I}n addition, allometric growth patterns of the seven populations differed significantly, demonstrating that developmental changes (plastic or adaptive) operated between these populations. {P}ositive correlation between morphometric and genetic data confirmed the influence of genetic factors on morphology. {A}ll observed differences were attributed either to genetic and/or environmental factors, which seemed to play a major role in influencing morphology of wild {N}ile tilapia populations. {W}e recommend further studies to be carried out under controlled conditions to confirm the role of temperature, p{H} and salinity in morphological diversification of {N}ile tilapia.}, keywords = {{KENYA} ; {RIFT} {VALLEY}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{E}nvironmental {B}iology of {F}ishes}, volume = {99}, numero = {5}, pages = {473--485}, ISSN = {0378-1909}, year = {2016}, DOI = {10.1007/s10641-016-0492-y}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010067212}, }
