@article{fdi:010067176, title = {{F}irst inventory of the echinoderms from {J}uan de {N}ova ({I}les {E}parses, {F}rance) in the {M}ozambique {C}hannel, {S}outh {W}estern {I}ndian {O}cean}, author = {{M}ulochau, {T}. and {C}onand, {C}. and {S}t{\¨o}hr, {S}. and {E}leaume, {M}. and {C}habanet, {P}ascale}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{J}uan de {N}ova is one of the {I}les {E}parses, {F}rench islands scattered in the {M}ozambique {C}hannel ({W}estern {I}ndia {O}cean). {T}hey have been kept isolated of the anthropogenic influences which makes them rare areas to study biodiversity and provides elements of comparison with areas that are strongly impacted by urbanization and fishing. {T}he program {B}iorecie ({B}iodiversity, {R}esources and {C}onservation of {E}parses {I}slands) was conducted to complete the inventories of several marine groups including the echinoderms, which had never been assessed in {J}uan de {N}ova before. {A} multidisciplinary team explored the reef slopes of the island by scuba diving down to a depth of 25 metersand the reef flats at low tide collecting specimens and taking photos for identification. {T}he total species richness for echinoderms was 60 with 51 on the reef flats and lagoon, and 22 on the reef slopes. {W}e have sampled 21 species of {H}olothuroidea, 16 {O}phiuroidea, 10 {E}chinoidea, 7 {A}steroidea, and 6 {C}rinoidea. {T}he commercial species of {H}olothuroidea, some of which are now classified as endangered on the red list of {UICN}, like {T}helenota ananas and {H}olothuria nobilis, were common on the reef flats, lagoon and reef slopes of the island, and show the importance of efficiently these sanctuaries of biodiversity.}, keywords = {{OCEAN} {INDIEN} {ILES} ; {TAAF} ; {MOZAMBIQUE} {CANAL} ; {EPARSES} {ILES} ; {JUNA} {DE} {NOVA} {ILE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{W}estern {I}ndian {O}cean {J}ournal of {M}arine {S}cience}, volume = {13}, numero = {1}, pages = {23--30}, ISSN = {0856-860{X}}, year = {2014}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010067176}, }
