@article{fdi:010067175, title = {{O}ceanic dispersal, vicariance and human introduction shaped the modern distribution of the termites {R}eticulitermes, {H}eterotermes and {C}optotermes}, author = {{B}ourguignon, {T}. and {L}o, {N}. and {S}obotnik, {J}. and {S}illam-{D}uss{\`e}s, {D}avid and {R}oisin, {Y}. and {E}vans, {T}.{A}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{R}eticulitermes,{H}eterotermesand{C}optotermesform a small termite clade with partly overlapping distributions. {A}lthough native species occur across all continents, the factors influencing their distribution are poorly known. {H}ere, we reconstructed the historical biogeography of these termites using mitochondrial genomes of species collected on six continents. {O}ur analyses showed that{R}eticulitermessplit from{H}eterotermes+{C}optotermesat 59.5 {M}a (49.9-69.5 {M}a 95% {CI}), yet the oldest split within{R}eticulitermes({E}urasia and {N}orth {A}merica) is 16.1 {M}a (13.4-19.5 {M}a) and the oldest split within{H}eterotermes+{C}optotermesis 36.0 {M}a (33.9-40.5 {M}a). {W}e detected 14 disjunctions between biogeographical realms, all of which occurred within the last 34 {M}a, not only after the break-up of {P}angaea, but also with the continents in similar to current positions. {L}and dispersal over land bridges explained four disjunctions, oceanic dispersal by wood rafting explained eight disjunctions, and human introduction was the source of two recent disjunctions. {T}hese wood-eating termites, therefore, appear to have acquired their modern worldwide distribution through multiple dispersal processes, with oceanic dispersal and human introduction favoured by the ecological traits of nesting in wood and producing replacement reproductives.}, keywords = {{MONDE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{P}roceedings of the {R}oyal {S}ociety {B} : {B}iological {S}ciences}, volume = {283}, numero = {1827}, pages = {art. no 20160179 [9 ]}, ISSN = {1471-2954}, year = {2016}, DOI = {10.1098/rspb.2016.0179}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010067175}, }
