@article{fdi:010067008, title = {{U}se of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi to improve the drought tolerance of {C}upressus atlantica {G}.}, author = {{Z}arik, {L}. and {M}eddich, {A}. and {H}ijri, {M}. and {H}afidi, {M}. and {O}uhammou, {A}. and {O}uahmane, {L}. and {D}uponnois, {R}obin and {B}oumezzough, {A}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{I}n this study, we investigated whether indigenous arbuscular mycorrhizal ({AM}) fungi could improve the tolerance of {C}upressus atlantica against water deficit. {W}e tested a gradient of watering regime spanning from 90% to 25% of soil retention capacity of water on mycorhized and non-mycorhized seedlings in pot cultures with sterilized and non-sterilized soils. {O}ur result showed a positive impact of {AM} fungi on shoot height, stem diameter and biomass as well as on the growth rate. {W}e also observed that inoculation with {AM} fungi significantly improved uptake of minerals by {C}. atlantica in both sterilized and non-sterilized soils independently of water regimes. {W}e found that mycorhized plants maintained higher relative water content ({RWC}) and water potential compared with nonmycorhized plants that were subjected to drought-stress regimes (50% and 25% of soil retention capacity). {T}he contents of proline and of soluble sugars showed that their concentrations decreased in non-mycorhized plants subjected to {DS}. {S}uperoxide dismutase ({SOD}) and catalase ({CAT}) activities also decreased in non-mycorhized plants submitted to {DS} compared to mycorhized plants. {T}he same pattern was observed by measuring peroxidase ({POD}) enzyme activity. {T}he results demonstrated that {AM} fungal inoculation promoted the growth and tolerance of {C}. atlantica against {DS} in pot cultures. {T}herefore, mycorrhizal inoculation could be a potential solution for the conservation and reestablishment of {C}. atlantica in its natural ecosystem.}, keywords = {{C}upressus atlantica ; {A}rbuscular mycorrhizal fungi ; {D}rought ; {W}ater stress tolerance ; {A}ntioxidant ; {M}orocco ; {MAROC}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{C}omptes {R}endus {B}iologies}, volume = {339}, numero = {5-6}, pages = {185--196}, ISSN = {1631-0691}, year = {2016}, DOI = {10.1016/j.crvi.2016.04.009}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010067008}, }
