@article{fdi:010066998, title = {{T}oxin and growth responses of the neurotoxic dinoflagellate {V}ulcanodinium rugosum to varying temperature and salinity}, author = {{A}badie, {E}. and {M}uguet, {A}. and {B}erteaux, {T}. and {C}homerat, {N}. and {H}ess, {P}. and {D}'{O}rb{C}astel, {E}. {R}. and {M}asseret, {E}stelle and {L}aabir, {M}ohamed}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{V}ulcanodinium rugosum, a recently described species, produces pinnatoxins. {T}he {IFR}-{VRU}-01 strain, isolated from a {F}rench {M}editerranean lagoon in 2010 and identified as the causative dinoflagellate contaminating mussels in the {I}ngril {L}agoon ({F}rench {M}editerranean) with pinnatoxin-{G}, was grown in an enriched natural seawater medium. {W}e tested the effect of temperature and salinity on growth, pinnatoxin-{G} production and chlorophyll a levels of this dinoflagellate. {T}hese factors were tested in combinations of five temperatures (15, 20, 25, 30 and 35 degrees {C}) and five salinities (20, 25, 30, 35 and 40) at an irradiance of 100 mu mol photon m(-2) s(-1). {V}. rugosum can grow at temperatures and salinities ranging from 20 degrees {C} to 30 degrees {C} and 20 to 40, respectively. {T}he optimal combination for growth (0.39 +/- 0.11 d(-1)) was a temperature of 25 degrees {C} and a salinity of 40. {R}esults suggest that {V}. rugosum is euryhaline and thermophile which could explain why this dinoflagellate develops in situ only from {J}une to {S}eptember. {V}. rugosum growth rate and pinnatoxin-{G} production were highest at temperatures ranging between 25 and 30 degrees {C}. {T}his suggests that the dinoflagellate may give rise to extensive blooms in the coming decades caused by the climate change-related increases in temperature expected in the {M}editerranean coasts.}, keywords = {{V}ulcanodinium rugosum ; {M}editerranean {I}ngril {L}agoon ; toxin production ; growth conditions ; temperature ; salinity ; {MEDITERRANEE} ; {FRANCE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{T}oxins}, volume = {8}, numero = {5}, pages = {art. 136 [18 p.]}, ISSN = {2072-6651}, year = {2016}, DOI = {10.3390/toxins8050136}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010066998}, }
