@article{fdi:010066992, title = {{F}irst insights into the genetic diversity and origin of {L}eishmania infantum in {M}ont {R}olland ({T}hies region, {S}enegal)}, author = {{C}assan, {C}{\'e}cile and {D}ione, {M}. {M}. and {D}ereure, {J}. and {D}iedhiou, {S}. and {B}ucheton, {B}runo and {H}ide, {M}. and {K}ako, {C}. and {G}aye, {O}. and {S}enghor, {M}. and {N}iang, {A}. {A}. and {B}anulas, {A}. {L}. and {F}aye, {B}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{V}isceral leishmaniasis is not endemic in {W}est {A}frica. {H}owever, high seroprevalence of {L}eishmania infantum infection (one of the {L}eishmania species that cause visceral leishmaniasis) was detected in dogs and humans in the {M}ont {R}olland community (close to {T}hies, {S}enegal), despite the lack of reports concerning human clinical cases. {O}ur aim was to genetically characterize this {L}. infantum population and identify its origin. {W}e thus conducted seven field surveys in 25 villages of the {M}ont {R}olland community between 2005 and 2009 and blood samples were collected from 205 dogs. {S}erological testing indicated that 92 dogs (44.9%) were positive for {L}eishmania infection. {L}. infantum was identified as the cause of infection. {A}nalysis of 29 {L}. infantum isolates from these dogs by multilocus microsatellite typing and multilocus sequence typing indicated that this population had very limited genetic diversity, low level of heterozygosity and only seven different genotypes (79.3% of all isolates had the same genotype). {M}ultilocus sequence typing showed that the {M}ont {R}olland isolates clustered with strains from the {M}editerranean basin and were separated from {E}ast {A}frican and {A}sian strains. {T}herefore, our data suggest a quite recent and unique introduction into {S}enegal of a {L}. infantum strain from the {M}editerranean basin.}, keywords = {{L}eishmania infantum ; {D}og ; {S}enegal ; {M}icrosatellites ; {M}ultilocus sequence typing ; {P}hylogeny ; {SENEGAL}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{M}icrobes and {I}nfection}, volume = {18}, numero = {6}, pages = {412--420}, ISSN = {1286-4579}, year = {2016}, DOI = {10.1016/j.micinf.2016.02.003}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010066992}, }
