@article{fdi:010066839, title = {{M}odelling cyclonic eddies in the {D}elagoa {B}ight region}, author = {{C}ossa, {O}. and {P}ous, {S}. and {P}enven, {P}ierrick and {C}apet, {X}. and {R}eason, {C}. {J}. {C}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he objective of this study is to document and shed light on the circulation around the {D}elagoa {B}ight region in the southern {M}ozambique {C}hannel using a realistic modelling approach. {A} simulation including mesoscale forcings at the boundaries of our regional configuration succeeds in reproducing the general circulation in the region as well as the existence of a semi-permanent cyclonic eddy, whose existence is attested by in situ measurements in the {B}ight. {C}haracterised by a persistent local minimum in {SSH} located around 26 degrees {S}-34 degrees {E}, this cyclonic eddy termed herein the {D}elagoa {B}ight lee eddy occurs about 25% of the time with no clear seasonal preference. {P}oleward moving cyclones, mostly generated further north, occur another 25% of the time in the {B}ight area. {A} tracking method applied to eddies generated in {D}elagoa {B}ight using model outputs as well as {AVISO} data confirms the model realism and provides additional statistics. {T}he diameter of the eddy core varies between 61 and 147 km and the average life time exceeds 20 days. {A}dditional model analyses reveal the systematic presence of negative vorticity in the {B}ight that can organise and form a {D}elagoa {B}ight lee eddy depending on the intensity of an intermittent southward flow along the shore and the spatial distribution of surrounding mesoscale features. {I}n addition, the model solution shows other cyclonic eddies generated near {I}nhambane and eventually travelling through the {B}ight. {T}heir generation and pathways appears to be linked with large {M}ozambique {C}hannel rings.}, keywords = {{D}elagoa {B}ight ; {C}yclonic lee eddy ; {C}oastal countercurrent ; {N}umerical model ; {M}ozambique {C}hannel ; {S}helf processes ; {MOZAMBIQUE} {CANAL}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{C}ontinental {S}helf {R}esearch}, volume = {119}, numero = {}, pages = {14--29}, ISSN = {0278-4343}, year = {2016}, DOI = {10.1016/j.csr.2016.03.006}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010066839}, }
