@article{fdi:010066828, title = {{A}nnual cycle of the upper-ocean circulation and properties in the tropical western {I}ndian {O}cean}, author = {{M}anyilizu, {M}. and {P}enven, {P}ierrick and {R}eason, {C}. {J}. {C}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{A} regional ocean model was used to simulate the annual cycle of the upper-ocean dynamics and its influence on ocean properties in the tropical western {I}ndian {O}cean. {S}urface winds and heat fluxes from the {N}ational {C}enters for {E}nvironmental {P}rediction ({NCEP}) reanalysis forced the model ({M}odel_{NCEP}) with initial and lateral boundary conditions derived from the {S}imple {O}cean {D}ata {A}ssimilation ({SODA}). {T}he model findings were in good agreement with previous research, satellite and observational data as well as another model configuration forced by {C}omprehensive {O}cean and {A}tmosphere {D}ata {S}ets ({COADS}). {T}he initial and lateral boundary conditions for {M}odel_{COADS} were extracted from {W}orld {O}cean {A}tlas 2001. {A}nticyclonic wind stress curl occurred to the north of {M}adagascar, and extended towards the {T}anzanian coast throughout the year, leading to {E}kman convergence and downwelling in that region. {T}he lowest sea-surface height values during the year occurred between 5 degrees and 12 degrees {S} with an elongated and contracted shape. {T}he {E}ast {A}frican {C}oastal {C}urrent ({EACC}) was in phase with the westward {N}orth-{E}ast {M}adagascar {C}urrent ({NEMC}) throughout the year with volume transports peaking in {J}une through {J}uly in the model forced by {NCEP} reanalysis. {T}he variability of the volume transport, ocean currents, temperature and salinity to the north of {M}adagascar on the path of the {NEMC} mirrored those in the middle {T}anzanian shelf on the path of the {EACC} throughout the year. {T}he {NEMC} seemed to influence the water masses on the {T}anzanian shelf, with cooler and lower-salinity water in the {S}outh-{W}est {M}onsoon, and warmer and saltier water during the {N}orth-{E}ast {M}onsoon.}, keywords = {annual cycle ; {E}ast {A}frican {C}oastal {C}urrent ; {N}orth-{E}ast {M}adagascar {C}urrent ; {N}orth-{E}ast {M}onsoon ; ocean dynamics ; {S}outh-{W}est {M}onsoon ; {T}anzanian shelf ; {OCEAN} {INDIEN} ; {MADAGASCAR} ; {AFRIQUE} {DE} {L}'{EST} ; {ZANZIBAR} ; {MOZAMBIQUE} {CANAL} ; {TANZANIE} ; {ZONE} {TROPICALE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{A}frican {J}ournal of {M}arine {S}cience}, volume = {38}, numero = {1}, pages = {81--99}, ISSN = {1814-232{X}}, year = {2016}, DOI = {10.2989/1814232x.2016.1158123}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010066828}, }
