@article{fdi:010066774, title = {{C}haracterization of viral communities of biting midges and identification of novel {T}hogotovirus species and {R}habdovirus genus}, author = {{T}emmam, {S}. and {M}onteil-{B}ouchard, {S}. and {R}obert, {C}. and {B}audoin, {J}. {P}. and {S}ambou, {M}. and {A}ubadie-{L}adrix, {M}. and {L}abas, {N}. and {R}aoult, {D}idier and {M}ediannikov, {O}leg and {D}esnues, {C}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{M}ore than two thirds of emerging viruses are of zoonotic origin, and among them {RNA} viruses represent the majority. {C}eratopogonidae (genus {C}ulicoides) are well-known vectors of several viruses responsible for epizooties (bluetongue, epizootic haemorrhagic disease, etc.). {T}hey are also vectors of the only known virus infecting humans: the {O}ropouche virus. {F}emale midges usually feed on a variety of hosts, leading to possible transmission of emerging viruses from animals to humans. {I}n this context, we report here the analysis of {RNA} viral communities of {S}enegalese biting midges using next-generation sequencing techniques as a preliminary step toward the identification of potential viral biohazards. {S}equencing of the {RNA} virome of three pools of {C}ulicoides revealed the presence of a significant diversity of viruses infecting plants, insects and mammals. {S}everal novel viruses were detected, including a novel {T}hogotovirus species, related but genetically distant from previously described tick-borne thogotoviruses. {N}ovel rhabdoviruses were also detected, possibly constituting a novel {R}habdoviridae genus, and putatively restricted to insects. {S}equences related to the major viruses transmitted by {C}ulicoides, i.e., {A}frican horse sickness, bluetongue and epizootic haemorrhagic disease viruses were also detected. {T}his study highlights the interest in monitoring the emergence and circulation of zoonoses and epizooties using their arthropod vectors.}, keywords = {epizooties ; zoonoses ; viral metagenomics ; rhabdovirus ; thogotovirus ; biting midges}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{V}iruses-{B}asel}, volume = {8}, numero = {3}, pages = {art. 77 [18 p.]}, ISSN = {1999-4915}, year = {2016}, DOI = {10.3390/v8030077}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010066774}, }
