@article{fdi:010066733, title = {{O}n the dispersal of bottle gourd [{L}agenaria siceraria ({M}ol.) {S}tandl.] out of {A}frica : a contribution from the analysis of nuclear ribosomal {DNA} haplotypes, divergent paralogs and variants of 5.8{S} protein sequences}, author = {{N}'{D}ri, {A}. {N}. {A}. and {Z}oro, {B}. {I}. {A}. and {K}ouam{\'e}, {L}. {P}. and {D}umet, {D}ominique and {V}roh-{B}i, {I}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{B}ottle gourd ({L}agenaria siceraria), a multipurpose crop, is among the first domesticates of humans. {T}his study analyses nuclear ribosomal {DNA} (nr{DNA}) of the two cultivated subspecies to improve our understanding on the {A}frican origin and the dispersal to {A}sia. {A} total of 146 nr{DNA} sequences representing 79 individuals from {A}frican cultivars and 67 individuals from {A}sian cultivars were compared; the resulting nr{DNA} sequences were composed of 35 and 16 haplotypes specific to {A}frica and {A}sia, respectively, and two additional haplotypes shared by both continents. {W}hen all the r{DNA} haplotypes were bulked, the genetic differentiation ({F} ({ST}) ) was significant between the subspecies ({P} < 0.001), within {A}frica ({P} < 0.001) and within {A}sia ({P} < 0.05), and the nucleotide diversity was 2.5-fold higher in {A}frica. {S}orting the haplotypes by classes of paralogs revealed more classes in {A}frica, and in classes where {A}frican and {A}sian cultivars were represented, the diversity was higher in {A}frica, in general. {T}he 5.8{S}-coding regions showed two to four amino acid differences resulting to nine protein sequence variants, one of which encompassed all the {A}sian cultivars. {T}he nucleotide diversity at that shared variant was 1.43-fold higher in {A}frica than in {A}sia. {A}nalyses of phylogenetic networks revealed major shared haplotypes containing 23.91 % of the cultivars and having founder locations. {W}e suggest that {A}frican cultivars reached {A}sia. {T}he study tags for the first time nr{DNA} haplotypes capable of discriminating between and within the subspecies. {T}hirty single nucleotide polymorphisms ({SNP}s) and five insertion-deletions ({I}ndels) derived from the haplotypes and registered in {G}en{B}ank are provided.}, keywords = {{L}agenaria siceraria ; {B}ottle gourd ; r{DNA} haplotypes ; {SNP}s and {I}ndels ; {P}aralogs ; {A}mino acid sequences ; {AFRIQUE} ; {ASIE} ; {COTE} {D}'{IVOIRE} ; {BENIN}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{P}lant {M}olecular {B}iology {R}eporter}, volume = {34}, numero = {2}, pages = {454--466}, ISSN = {0735-9640}, year = {2016}, DOI = {10.1007/s11105-015-0936-0}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010066733}, }
