@article{fdi:010066680, title = {{S}tress tensor and focal mechanisms in the {D}ead {S}ea basin}, author = {{H}ofstetter, {A}. and {D}orbath, {C}atherine and {D}orbath, {L}ouis and {B}raeuer, {B}. and {W}eber, {M}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{W}e use the recorded seismicity, confined to the {D}ead {S}ea basin and its boundaries, by the {D}ead {S}ea {I}ntegrated {R}esearch ({DESIRE}) portable seismic network and the {I}srael and {J}ordan permanent seismic networks for studying the mechanisms of earthquakes in the {D}ead {S}ea basin. {T}he observed seismicity in the {D}ead {S}ea basin is divided into nine regions according to the spatial distribution of the earthquakes and the known tectonic features. {T}he large number of recording stations and the adequate station distribution allowed the reliable determinations of 494 earthquake focal mechanisms. {F}or each region, based on the inversion of the observed polarities of the earthquakes, we determine the focal mechanisms and the associated stress tensor. {F}or 159 earthquakes, out of the 494 focal mechanisms, we could determine compatible fault planes. {O}n the eastern side, the focal mechanisms are mainly strike-slip mechanism with nodal planes in the {N}-{S} and {E}-{W} directions. {T}he azimuths of the stress axes are well constrained presenting minimal variability in the inversion of the data, which is in agreement with the {E}astern {B}oundary fault on the east side of the {D}ead {S}ea basin and what we had expected from the regional geodynamics. {H}owever, larger variabilities of the azimuthal and dip angles are observed on the western side of the basin. {D}ue to the wider range of azimuths of the fault planes, we observe the switching of sigma(1) and sigma(2) or the switching of sigma(2) and sigma(3) as major horizontal stress directions. {T}his observed switching of stress axes allows having dip-slip and normal mechanisms in a region that is dominated by strike-slip motion.}, keywords = {{D}ead {S}ea basin ; {S}tress tensor ; {F}ocal mechanisms ; {JORDANIE} ; {ISRAEL} ; {MER} {MORTE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of {S}eismology}, volume = {20}, numero = {2}, pages = {669--699}, ISSN = {1383-4649}, year = {2016}, DOI = {10.1007/s10950-015-9550-8}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010066680}, }
