@article{fdi:010066199, title = {{R}evision of vernacular names for the freshwater fish of {F}rench {G}uiana}, author = {{G}renand, {P}ierre and {C}hapuis, {J}. and {C}ognat, {A}. and {C}ristinoi, {A}. and {D}avy, {D}. and {G}renand, {F}. and {J}{\'e}gu, {M}ichel and {K}eith, {P}. and {M}artin, {E}. and {N}emo, {F}. and {P}agezy, {H}. and {L}e {B}ail, {P}. {Y}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he fish fauna of {F}rench {G}uiana is one of the best described in the geographical area covering the {G}uiana {S}hield. {P}aradoxically, however, there is no summary document validated by ethnologists and specialized linguists that links the scientific names of the fish of this area to their vernacular names from the different language groups. {I}n this paper, we compile the presently existing data on species and vernacular names collected over several decades in {C}reole, {A}merindian ({K}ali'na, {P}alikur, {W}ayana, {W}ayapi and {T}eko), {N}enges or {M}aroons ({B}oni, {N}djuka and {S}ranan {T}ongo) languages as well as {F}rench and/or specialist aquarium terms and {B}razilian {P}ortuguese. {O}f the 416 fish species found in {F}rench {G}uiana, we can assign a common name to 85% of them by considering all these languages as a group. {T}hese common names can be more or less generic, covering a greater or lesser number of species that are similar or very close in their external morphology. {T}he fish currently without common names are mostly rare or small species of less than 5 cm. {T}he linguistic groups with broader geographic distributions ({B}razilian, {C}reole, {F}rench and specialist aquarium terminology) have named the most species but have also tended to give several local names to the same species. {T}aking into account the number of species present on the territory occupied by each linguistic group, the percentage of fish with at least one name ranges between 65 and 70% for {B}razilian, {F}rench, {C}reole, {K}ali'na, {W}ayana and {W}ayanpi, suggesting a degree of completeness of the nomenclature. {T}his is not the case for languages like {B}oni, {N}djuka, {P}alikur, {T}eko and {S}ranan {T}ongo, which will require new collections specifically geared towards these ethnic groups to fill the gaps.}, keywords = {{I}chthyofauna ; {F}rench {G}uiana ; {V}ernacular name ; {F}reshwater ; {GUYANE} {FRANCAISE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{C}ybium}, volume = {39}, numero = {4}, pages = {279--300}, ISSN = {0399-0974}, year = {2015}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010066199}, }
