@article{fdi:010066188, title = {{A} high resolution and quasi-zonal transect of dissolved {B}a in the {M}editerranean {S}ea}, author = {{J}acquet, {S}. {H}. {M}. and {M}onnin, {C}. and {R}iou, {V}irginie and {J}ullion, {L}. and {T}anhua, {T}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he dissolved barium ({D}_{B}a) data set for the {M}editerranean {S}ea is here expanded with data from a large-scale transect sampled in {A}pril 2011 ({M}84/3 cruise) at high resolution. {A} total of 833 seawater samples have been analyzed for {D}_{B}a. {O}ver the basin the {D}_{B}a content ranges from 38 to 85 nmol kg(-1) with local deep {D}_{B}a maxima reaching up to 172 nmol kg(-1). {D}eep {D}_{B}a maxima are associated with near bottom waters influenced by benthic processes and brine waters. {T}he water column is largely undersaturated with respect to barite ({B}a{SO}4, the main phase of particulate biogenic barium {P}_{B}a), with water column barite saturation state ranging between 0.2 and 0.6 over the basin. {T}his new {D}_{B}a dataset shows that the general zonal distribution of {D}_{B}a is impacted by the large-scale {M}editerranean circulation, as evidenced by the {L}evantine {I}ntermediate {W}ater zonal and meridional progression as well as by the eastward flow of surface {A}tlantic {W}ater. {H}owever biogeochemical processes are also at play, as suggested by an elevated {D}_{B}a content of deep waters and by local lower {D}_{B}a contents in intermediate waters. {T}hese features could be attributed to active cycling between the particulate and dissolved {B}a phases. {S}ince {P}_{B}a barite has been recognized in previous studies as a proxy for particulate organic carbon remineralization at intermediate depths, the significance of local changes in the water column {D}_{B}a patterns may be the key to better constrain the {B}a and carbon dynamics in the {M}editerranean {S}ea.}, keywords = {{D}issolved barium ; {B}arite saturation index ; {M}editerranean {S}ea ; {MEDITERRANEE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{M}arine {C}hemistry}, volume = {178}, numero = {}, pages = {1--7}, ISSN = {0304-4203}, year = {2016}, DOI = {10.1016/j.marchem.2015.12.001}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010066188}, }
