@article{fdi:010066090, title = {{A}llelopathic interactions between the brown algal genus {L}obophora ({D}ictyotales, {P}haeophyceae) and scleractinian corals}, author = {{V}ieira, {C}. and {T}homas, {O}. {P}. and {C}ulioli, {G}. and {G}enta-{J}ouve, {G}. and {H}oulbr{\`e}que, {F}anny and {G}aubert, {J}. and {D}e {C}lerck, {O}. and {P}ayri, {C}laude}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{A}llelopathy has been recently suggested as a mechanism by which macroalgae may outcompete corals in damaged reefs. {M}embers of the brown algal genus {L}obophora are commonly observed in close contact with scleractinian corals and have been considered responsible for negative effects of macroalgae to scleractinian corals. {R}ecent field assays have suggested the potential role of chemical mediators in this interaction. {W}e performed in situ bioassays testing the allelopathy of crude extracts and isolated compounds of several {L}obophora species, naturally associated or not with corals, against four corals in {N}ew {C}aledonia. {O}ur results showed that, regardless of their natural association with corals, organic extracts from species of the genus {L}obophora are intrinsically capable of bleaching some coral species upon direct contact. {A}dditionally, three new {C}-21 polyunsaturated alcohols named lobophorenols {A}-{C} (1-3) were isolated and identified. {S}ignificant all elopathic effects against {A}cropora muricata were identified for these compounds. {I}n situ observations in {N}ew {C}aledonia, however, indicated that while allelopathic interactions are likely to occur at the macroalgal-coral interface, {L}obophora spp. rarely bleached their coral hosts. {T}hese findings are important toward our understanding of the importance of allelopathy versus other processes such as herbivory in the interaction between macroalgae and corals in reef ecosystems.}, keywords = {{NOUVELLE} {CALEDONIE} ; {PACIFIQUE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{S}cientific {R}eports - {N}ature}, volume = {6}, numero = {}, pages = {18637}, ISSN = {2045-2322}, year = {2016}, DOI = {10.1038/srep18637}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010066090}, }
