@article{fdi:010066073, title = {{V}isible and infrared properties of unaltered to weathered rocks from {P}recambrian granite-greenstone terrains of the {W}est {A}frican {C}raton}, author = {{M}etelka, {V}. and {B}aratoux, {L}enka and {J}essell, {M}ark and {N}aba, {S}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{I}n situ and laboratory 0.35 mu m-2.5 mu m spectra of rocks from a {P}aleoproterozoic granite-greenstone terrain along with its {N}eoproterozoic sedimentary cover and derived regolith materials were examined in western {B}urkina {F}aso. {T}he reflectance spectra show the influence of typical arid to semi-arid weathering with the formation of desert varnish, iron films, and dust coatings. {F}e and {M}g-{OH} absorption features related to chlorite, amphibole, pyroxene, epidote, and biotite are observable in the mafic and intermediate meta-volcanic rocks as well as in the granodiorites and tonalites. {A}l-{OH} absorption caused by kaolinite, smectite, illite/muscovite are typical for meta-volcano-sedimentary schists, {T}arlcwaian-type detrital meta-sediments, sandstones of the {T}aoudeni basin, all of the weathered surfaces and regolith materials. {F}erric and ferrous iron absorptions related to both primary rock-forming minerals and secondary weathering minerals (goethite, hematite) were observed in most of the sampled materials. {T}he results show that although weathering alters the spectral signature of the fresh rock, indicative absorption features located in the short wave infrared region remain detectable. {I}n addition, spectra of soils partially reflect the mineral composition of the weathered rock surfaces. {T}he analysis of the hyperspectral data shows the potential of differentiating between the sampled surfaces. {T}he library presents a primary database for the geological and regolith analysis of remote sensing data in {W}est {A}frica.}, keywords = {{G}eology ; {I}nfrared spectra ; {W}eathering ; {W}est {A}frica ; {P}recambrian ; {AFRIQUE} {DE} {L}'{OUEST} ; {BURKINA} {FASO} ; {ZONE} {ARIDE}}, booktitle = {{T}ectonics, mineralisation and regolith evolution of the {W}est {A}frican {C}raton}, journal = {{J}ournal of {A}frican {E}arth {S}ciences}, volume = {112, part {B}}, numero = {{N}o sp{\'e}cial}, pages = {570--585}, ISSN = {1464-343{X}}, year = {2015}, DOI = {10.1016/j.jafrearsci.2015.10.003}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010066073}, }
