@article{fdi:010066048, title = {{C}an body traits, other than wings, reflect the flight ability of {T}riatominae bugs ?}, author = {{H}ernandez, {M}. {L}. and {D}ujardin, {J}ean-{P}ierre and {G}orla, {D}. {E}. and {C}atala, {S}. {S}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{I}ntroduction: {I}nsects of the subfamily {T}riatominae are vectors of {T}rypanosoma cruzi, the {C}hagas disease parasite, and their flying behavior has epidemiological importance. {T}he flying capacity is strikingly different across and within {T}riatominae species, as well as between sexes or individuals. {M}any {T}riatoma infestans individuals have wings but no flying muscles. {I}n other {T}riatominae species, no clear relationships were found between wing length and flying behavior. {I}f wing presence or size is not reflective of the flying behavior, which other parts of the body could be considered as reliable markers of this important function? {M}ethods: {T}he genus {M}epraia has exceptional characteristics with invariably wingless females and wingless or winged males. {W}e calculated the porous surface exposed to odorant molecules to estimate the olfactory capacity of {M}epraia spinolai. {T}he head shape and thorax size were estimated using the geometric morphometric approach and traditional morphometric techniques, respectively. {R}esults: {A}lary polymorphism in {M}. spinolai was significantly associated with consistent modification of the thorax size, head shape, and notable change in the estimated olfactory capacity. {T}he macropterous individuals had a larger olfactory surface and thorax size and significantly different head shape compared to those of the micropterous individuals. {C}onclusions: {W}e concluded that these structural changes could be associated with the flying potential of {T}riatominae. {T}hus, morphological attributes not found on wings could help determine the likely flying potential of the bugs.}, keywords = {{T}riatominae ; {A}lary polymorphism ; {O}lfactory sensilla ; {F}light ability ; {M}epraia spinolai ; {CHILI}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{R}evista da {S}ociedade {B}rasileira de {M}edicina {T}ropical}, volume = {48}, numero = {6}, pages = {682--691}, ISSN = {0037-8682}, year = {2015}, DOI = {10.1590/0037-8682-0249-2015}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010066048}, }
