@article{fdi:010065525, title = {{P}otential of {O}puntia ficus-indica for air pollution biomonitoring : a lead isotopic study}, author = {{E}l {H}ayek, {E}. and {E}l {S}amrani, {A}. and {L}artiges, {B}. and {K}azpard, {V}. and {B}enoit, {M}. and {M}unoz, {M}arguerite}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{O}puntia ficus-indica ({O}fi) is a long-domesticated cactus that is widespread throughout arid and semiarid regions. {O}fi is grown for both its fruits and edible cladodes, which are flattened photosynthetic stems. {Y}oung cladodes develop from mother cladodes, thus forming series of cladodes of different ages. {T}herefore, successive cladodes may hold some potential for biomonitoring over several years the local atmospheric pollution. {I}n this study, cladodes, roots, dust deposited onto the cladodes, and soil samples were collected in the vicinity of three heavily polluted sites, i.e., a fertilizer industry, the road side of a highway, and mine tailings. {T}he lead content was analyzed using atomic absorption spectroscopy ({AAS}) and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry ({ICP}-{MS}). {S}canning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive {X}-ray spectroscopy ({SEM}-{EDX}) was used to characterize the cladode surfaces and the nature of dust deposit, and the lead isotopes were analyzed to identify the origin of {P}b. {T}he results show that (i) {O}fi readily bioaccumulates {P}b, (ii) the lead isotopic composition of cladodes evidences a foliar pathway of lead into {O}fi and identifies the relative contributions of local {P}b sources, and (iii) an evolution of air quality is recorded with successive cladodes, which makes {O}fi a potential biomonitor to be used in environmental and health studies.}, keywords = {{O}puntia ficus-indica ; {A}tmospheric deposit ; {L}ead isotopes ; {SEM}-{EDX} ; {B}iomonitoring ; {LIBAN} ; {TUNISIE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{E}nvironmental {S}cience and {P}ollution {R}esearch}, volume = {22}, numero = {22}, pages = {17799--17809}, ISSN = {0944-1344}, year = {2015}, DOI = {10.1007/s11356-015-4998-1}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010065525}, }
