@article{fdi:010065513, title = {{C}oral-associated viruses and bacteria in the {H}a {L}ong {B}ay, {V}ietnam}, author = {{P}ham, {T}. {T}. and {C}hu, {V}. {T}. and {B}ui, {T}. {V}. {H}. and {N}guyen, {T}. {T}. and {T}ran, {Q}. {H}. and {C}ung, {T}. {N}. {M}. and {B}ouvier, {C}. and {B}rune, {J}. and {V}illeger, {S}. and {B}ouvier, {T}. and {B}ettarel, {Y}van}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{V}iruses inhabiting the surface mucus layer of scleractinian corals have received little ecological attention so far. {Y}et they have recently been shown to be highly abundant and could even play a pivotal role in coral health. {A} fundamental aspect that remains unresolved is whether their abundance and diversity change with the trophic state of their environment. {T}he present study examined the variability in the abundance of viral and bacterial epibionts on 13 coral species collected from 2 different sites in the {H}a {L}ong {B}ay, {V}ietnam: one station heavily affected by anthropogenic activity ({C}at {B}a {I}sland) and one protected offshore station ({L}ong {C}hau {I}sland). {I}n general, viral abundance was significantly higher in coral mucus (mean = 10.6 +/- 2.0 x 10(7) virus-like particles ml(-1)) than in the surrounding water (5.2 +/- 1.3 x 10(7) virus-like particles ml(-1)). {C}oncomitantly, the abundance and community diversity (inferred from phylogenetic and morphological analyses) of their mucosal bacterial hosts strongly differed from their planktonic counterparts. {S}urprisingly, despite large differences in water quality and nutrient concentrations between {C}at {B}a and {L}ong {C}hau, there were no significant differences in the concentrations of epibiotic viruses and bacteria measured in the only 2 coral species (i.e. {P}avona decussata and {L}obophyllia flabelliformis) that were common at both sites. {T}he ability of corals to shed bacteria to compensate for their fast growth in nutrient-rich mucus is questioned here.}, keywords = {{V}iruses ; {C}oral-associated bacteria ; {M}ucus ; {S}ymbionts ; {C}oral reefs ; {VIET} {NAM} ; {HA} {LONG} {BAIE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{A}quatic {M}icrobial {E}cology}, volume = {76}, numero = {2}, pages = {149--161}, ISSN = {0948-3055}, year = {2015}, DOI = {10.3354/ame01775}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010065513}, }
