@article{fdi:010065299, title = {{A}cceptability of two ready-to-use therapeutic foods by {HIV}-positive patients in {V}ietnam}, author = {{B}rown, {M}. and {N}ga, {T}. {T}. and {H}oang, {M}. {A}. and {M}aalouf-{M}anasseh, {Z}. and {H}ammond, {W}. and {T}huc, {T}. {M}. {L}. and {M}inh, {T}. {H}. {N}. and {H}op, {T}. {L}. and {B}erger, {J}acques and {W}ieringa, {F}ranck}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{B}ackground: {R}eady-to-use therapeutic food ({RUTF}) has been found effective in treating severe acute malnutrition. {V}ietnam's {N}ational {I}nstitute of {N}utrition ({NIN}), the {I}nstitut de {R}echerche pour le {D}eveloppement ({IRD}), and {UNICEF} collaborated to formulate a local {RUTF} called {H}igh-{E}nergy {B}ar for {I}ntegrated {M}anagement of {A}cute {M}alnutrition ({HEBI}). {RUTF} might be useful to address malnutrition in {HIV} patients. {O}bjective: {T}o compare the acceptability of the local {RUTF} and an imported {RUTF} among malnourished people with {HIV} in {V}ietnam {M}ethods: {T}he acceptability of {HEBI} and {P}lumpy'{N}ut was studied among 80 {HIV}-positive children and 80 {HIV}-positive adults. {I}n a crossover design, participants were randomly assigned to receive either {P}lumpy'{N}ut or {HEBI} for 2 weeks and were switched to the other product for the subsequent 2 weeks. {A} third (control) group of about 40 {HIV}-positive participants in each study was randomly assigned to receive no {RUTF}. {N}urses took anthropometric measurements weekly, and the subjects or their caregivers monitored daily {RUTF} intake. {R}esults: {C}hildren consumed 69% of {HEBI} and 65% of {P}lumpy'{N}ut (p = .13). {A}dults consumed 91% of {HEBI} and 81% of {P}lumpy'{N}ut (p = .059). {B}oth children (p = .058) and adults (p <= .0001) preferred {HEBI}. {S}ignificant gains were observed in percent weight (p = .035), weight-for-age (p = .014), and body mass index ({BMI})-for-age (p = .036) in children who received {RUTF} and in percent weight (p = .017) and {BMI} (p = .0048) in adults who received {RUTF} compared with the control groups. {C}onclusions: {I}n this study in {V}ietnam, both {HEBI} and {P}lumpy'{N}ut were found acceptable by people with {HIV}.}, keywords = {{V}ietnam ; {SAM} ; {HIV} ; {RUTF} ; acceptability ; {VIET} {NAM}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{F}ood and {N}utrition {B}ulletin}, volume = {36}, numero = {2}, pages = {102--110}, ISSN = {0379-5721}, year = {2015}, DOI = {10.1177/0379572115587498}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010065299}, }
