@article{fdi:010065275, title = {{S}patio-temporalgenetic structuring of {L}eishmania major in {T}unisia by microsatellite analysis}, author = {{H}arrabi, {M}. and {B}ettaieb, {J}. and {G}hawar, {W}. and {T}oumi, {A}. and {Z}aatour, {A}. and {Y}azidi, {R}. and {C}haabane, {S}. and {C}halghaf, {B}. and {H}ide, {M}. and {B}anuls, {A}nne-{L}aure and {B}en {S}alah, {A}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{I}n {T}unisia, cases of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis caused by {L}eishmania major are increasing and spreading from the south-west to new areas in the center. {T}o improve the current knowledge on {L}. major evolution and population dynamics, we performed multi-locus microsatellite typing of human isolates from {T}unisian governorates where the disease is endemic ({G}afsa, {K}airouan and {S}idi {B}ouzid governorates) and collected during two periods: 1991-1992 and 2008-2012. {A}nalysis ({F}-statistics and {B}ayesian model-based approach) of the genotyping results of isolates collected in {S}idi {B}ouzid in 1991-1992 and 2008-2012 shows that, over two decades, in the same area, {L}eishmania parasites evolved by generating genetically differentiated populations. {T}he genetic patterns of 2008-2012 isolates from the three governorates indicate that {L}. major populations did not spread gradually from the south to the center of {T}unisia, according to a geographical gradient, suggesting that human activities might be the source of the disease expansion. {T}he genotype analysis also suggests previous ({B}ayesian model-based approach) and current ({F}-statistics) flows of genotypes between governorates and districts. {H}uman activities as well as reservoir dynamics and the effects of environmental changes could explain how the disease progresses. {T}his study provides new insights into the evolution and spread of {L}. major in {T}unisia that might improve our understanding of the parasite flow between geographically and temporally distinct populations.}, keywords = {{TUNISIE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{P}los {N}eglected {T}ropical {D}iseases}, volume = {9}, numero = {8}, pages = {e0004017 [16 p.]}, ISSN = {1935-2735}, year = {2015}, DOI = {10.1371/journal.pntd.0004017}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010065275}, }
