@article{fdi:010065257, title = {{S}cenario-based numerical modelling and the palaeo-historic record of tsunamis in {W}allis and {F}utuna, {S}outhwest {P}acific}, author = {{L}amarche, {G}. and {P}opinet, {S}. and {P}elletier, {B}ernard and {M}ountjoy, {J}. and {G}off, {J}. and {D}elaux, {S}. and {B}ind, {J}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{W}e investigated the tsunami hazard in the remote {F}rench territory of {W}allis and {F}utuna, {S}outhwest {P}acific, using the {G}erris flow solver to produce numerical models of tsunami generation, propagation and inundation. {W}allis consists of the inhabited volcanic island of {U}vea that is surrounded by a lagoon delimited by a barrier reef. {F}utuna and the island of {A}lofi form the {H}orn {A}rchipelago located ca. 240 km east of {W}allis. {T}hey are surrounded by a narrow fringing reef. {F}utuna and {A}lofi emerge from the {N}orth {F}iji {T}ransform {F}ault that marks the seismically active {P}acific-{A}ustralia plate boundary. {W}e generated 15 tsunami scenarios. {F}or each, we calculated maximum wave elevation ({MWE}), inundation distance and expected time of arrival ({ETA}). {T}he tsunami sources were local, regional and distant earthquake faults located along the {P}acific {R}im. {I}n {W}allis, the outer reef may experience 6.8 m-high {MWE}. {U}vea is protected by the barrier reef and the lagoon, but inundation depths of 2-3m occur in several coastal areas. {I}n {F}utuna, flow depths exceeding 2m are modelled in several populated areas, and have been confirmed by a post-{S}eptember 2009 {S}outh {P}acific tsunami survey. {T}he channel between the islands of {F}utuna and {A}lofi amplified the 2009 tsunami, which resulted in inundation distance of almost 100m and {MWE} of 4.4 m. {T}his first ever tsunami hazard modelling study of {W}allis and {F}utuna compares well with palaeotsunamis recognised on both islands and observation of the impact of the 2009 {S}outh {P}acific tsunami. {T}he study provides evidence for the mitigating effect of barrier and fringing reefs from tsunamis.}, keywords = {{WALLIS} {ET} {FUTUNA} ; {PACIFIQUE} {SUD} {OUEST}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{N}atural {H}azards and {E}arth {S}ystem {S}ciences}, volume = {15}, numero = {8}, pages = {1763--1784}, ISSN = {1561-8633}, year = {2015}, DOI = {10.5194/nhess-15-1763-2015}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010065257}, }
