@article{fdi:010065213, title = {{H}ydrological changes in west {A}mazonia over the past 6 ka inferred from geochemical proxies in the sediment record of a floodplain lake}, author = {{A}niceto, {K}. and {M}oreira {T}urcq, {P}atricia and {C}ordeiro, {R}.{C}. and {Q}uintana, {I}. and {F}raizy, {P}ascal and {T}urcq, {B}runo}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he {A}mazon is responsible for the higher discharge of water and sediment from continent to ocean in the world, but the {A}mazon basin embodies a large variety of regions with different seasonal climate, hydrological regimes and vegetation. {S}ome of these compartments may be considered as the most critical zones because they encompass severe changes in the recent past and one of the geomorphological features mostly impacted by these changes are the {A}mazon floodplains. {I}n this study we report data from a floodplain lake, {Q}uistococha, in {P}eru. {T}he sediment was dated, radiographed, described and bulk density, granulometry, mineral composition, and total organic carbon were determined. {T}wo distinctive sedimentary depositional phases were identified. {D}uring the first one, between 6100 and 5600 cal years {BP}, {Q}uistococha {L}ake was strongly influenced by the {A}mazon {R}iver constraining high sediment accumulation rates. {T}he influence of {A}mazon {R}iver decreased and ceased around 5600 cal years {BP}, due to an avulsion of the {R}iver toward its present-day position. {B}etween 5600 and 2600 cal years {BP} a gap in sedimentation is observed, probably related to the dry mid-{H}olocene climate conditions. {T}he sedimentation re-started about 2600 cal years {BP}, now the lake is an isolated lake.
