@article{fdi:010064932, title = {{F}irst detection of an enterovirus {C}99 in a captive chimpanzee with acute flaccid paralysis, from the {T}chimpounga chimpanzee rehabilitation center, {R}epublic of {C}ongo}, author = {{M}ombo, {I}. {M}. and {B}erthet, {N}. and {L}ukashev, {A}. {N}. and {B}leicker, {T}. and {B}runink, {S}. and {L}eger, {L}ucas and {A}tencia, {R}. and {C}ox, {D}. and {B}ouchier, {C}. and {D}urand, {P}. and {A}rnathau, {C}. and {B}razier, {L}. and {F}air, {J}. {N}. and {S}chneider, {B}. {S}. and {D}rexler, {J}. {F}. and {P}rugnolle, {F}ranck and {D}rosten, {C}. and {R}enaud, {F}. and {L}eroy, {E}ric and {R}ougeron, {V}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{E}nteroviruses, members of the {P}icornaviridae family, are ubiquitous viruses responsible for mild to severe infections in human populations around the world. {I}n 2010 {P}ointe-{N}oire, {R}epublic of {C}ongo recorded an outbreak of acute flaccid paralysis ({AFP}) in the humans, caused by wild poliovirus type 1 ({WPV}1). {O}ne month later, in the {T}chimpounga sanctuary near {P}ointe-{N}oire, a chimpanzee developed signs similar to {AFP}, with paralysis of the lower limbs. {I}n the present work, we sought to identify the pathogen, including viral and bacterial agents, responsible for this illness. {I}n order to identify the causative agent, we evaluated a fecal specimen by {PCR} and sequencing. {A} {H}uman enterovirus {C}, specifically of the {EV}-{C}99 type was potentially responsible for the illness in this chimpanzee. {T}o rule out other possible causative agents, we also investigated the bacteriome and the virome using next generation sequencing. {T}he majority of bacterial reads obtained belonged to commensal bacteria (95%), and the mammalian virus reads matched mainly with viruses of the {P}icornaviridae family (99%), in which enteroviruses were the most abundant (99.6%). {T}his study thus reports the first identification of a chimpanzee presenting {AFP} most likely caused by an enterovirus and demonstrates once again the cross-species transmission of a human pathogen to an ape.}, keywords = {{CONGO}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{P}los {O}ne}, volume = {10}, numero = {8}, pages = {e0136700 [11 p.]}, ISSN = {1932-6203}, year = {2015}, DOI = {10.1371/journal.pone.0136700}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010064932}, }
