@article{fdi:010064868, title = {{S}easonal variability of bull and tiger shark presence on the west coast of {R}eunion {I}sland, western {I}ndian {O}cean}, author = {{B}laison, {A}. and {J}aquemet, {S}. and {G}uyomard, {D}. and {V}angrevelynghe, {G}. and {G}azzo, {T}. and {C}liff, {G}. and {C}otel, {P}ascal and {S}oria, {M}arc}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{A} fisheries-independent survey using longlines and drumlines, and an acoustic telemetry study, revealed that bull sharks {C}archarhinus leucas and tiger sharks {G}aleocerdo cuvier occur throughout the year off the west coast of {R}eunion {I}sland. {T}he research, which commenced in 2011, was conducted in response to an increase in the rate of shark attacks. {J}uvenile, subadult and young adult tiger sharks of 111-390 cm total length ({TL}) were caught in all months except {J}uly; the sex ratio was 1:1 ({M}:{F}; n = 61). {A}ll bull sharks taken, except one (183 cm {TL}), were mature (205-329 cm {TL}), with a sex ratio of 0.7:1 ({M}:{F}; n = 54), and catches occurred throughout the year except in {M}ay and {A}ugust, with the highest {CPUE} in {S}eptember. {P}resence/absence of a total of 46 tagged tiger sharks and 36 tagged bull sharks was monitored by means of 42 acoustic receivers distributed along the west coast of the island. {T}agged tiger sharks were detected in all months, with seasonal variation between sexes. {D}etections of males remained low throughout the year but with a peak in winter, whereas detections of females were low in {M}ay and {A}ugust only and peaked in summer. {T}agged bull sharks of both sexes were more abundant in winter than in summer, with females present year round. {T}he reasons for the apparent differences in seasonality found in longline and drumline catches compared to acoustic monitoring are discussed.}, keywords = {acoustic telemetry ; {CPUE} ; shark attack ; total length ; {REUNION} ; {OCEAN} {INDIEN}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{A}frican {J}ournal of {M}arine {S}cience}, volume = {37}, numero = {2}, pages = {199--208}, ISSN = {1814-232{X}}, year = {2015}, DOI = {10.2989/1814232x.2015.1050453}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010064868}, }
