@article{fdi:010064772, title = {{G}roundwater recharge by {S}ahelian rivers-consequences for agricultural development : example from the lower {K}omadugu {Y}obe {R}iver ({E}astern {N}iger, {L}ake {C}had {B}asin)}, author = {{G}enthon, {P}ierre and {H}ector, {B}. and {L}uxereau, {A}. and {D}escloitres, {M}arc and {A}bdou, {H}. and {H}inderer, {J}. and {B}akalowicz, {M}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{I}n the {S}ahel region, temporary rivers and ponds constitute green spaces of welfare where sustainable development requires parsimonious management of water resources. {T}he {K}omadugu {Y}obe valley in {E}astern {N}iger is presented here as an example case of recent agricultural development based on irrigated pepper cropping. {P}iezometric maps indicate there that the river recharges the upper {Q}uaternary aquifer. {A} simplified numerical model allows to quantify the exchanges between the river and the aquifer, based mainly on exploration geophysics data and three piezometric records, covering between 1 and 3 years of our 4 years modeling period. {R}echarge at the valley axis is modeled with a linear river coefficient constant for each hydrological year. {T}he main findings are that: (i) during dry years, the river is disconnected from the aquifer and separated from it by a layer of unsaturated medium, (ii) however, this effect can be reversed, such as during the 2010-2011 wet year or after the {S}ahelian drought event of the 1980s and 1990s, (iii) the infiltration rate from the river amounts to 30-40 % of its total discharge and to at least four times the abstraction for pepper irrigation along its 150 km lower course at the {N}iger-{N}igeria boundary, which implies that neither the aquifer recharge nor the river discharge is at risk due to the present agricultural development. {S}imilar modeling near temporary river axes could provide some help in water resource management in the {S}ahel.}, keywords = {{A}quifer recharge ; {I}rrigated pepper farming ; {G}roundwater modeling ; {S}ustainable development ; {L}ake {C}had {B}asin ; {K}omadugu {Y}obe ; {NIGER} ; {SAHEL} ; {TCHAD} {LAC} {BASSIN}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{E}nvironmental {E}arth {S}ciences}, volume = {74}, numero = {2}, pages = {1291--1302}, ISSN = {1866-6280}, year = {2015}, DOI = {10.1007/s12665-015-4119-y}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010064772}, }
