@article{fdi:010064761, title = {{L}ow-frequency variability and zonal contrast in {S}ahel rainfall and {A}tlantic sea surface temperature teleconnections during the last century}, author = {{D}ieppois, {B}. and {D}urand, {A}. and {F}ournier, {M}. and {D}iedhiou, {A}rona and {F}ontaine, {B}. and {M}assei, {N}. and {N}ouaceur, {Z}. and {S}ebag, {D}avid}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}his study systematically examines teleconnections between {A}tlantic sea surface temperature ({SST}) and the west-east distribution of {S}ahel rainfall throughout the twentieth century, taking nonstationarity into account. {S}ahel rainfall variability of six selected rain gauges displays three dominant time scales: multi-decadal (> 20 years), quasi-decadal (8-18 years) and interannual (2-8 years). {R}egarding their patterns of low-frequency scales, three coherent {S}ahelian subregions can be identified: the {A}tlantic {C}oast ({D}akar), western-central {S}ahel ({N}ioro and {M}opti) and eastern {S}ahel ({N}iamey, {M}aradi, {M}aine-{S}oroa). {C}ross-analyses combining spectral and multivariate analyses of 20 station-based data and {W}est-{A}frican gridded rainfall data statistically confirm dissimilarities between the western and eastern {S}ahel. {W}estern and eastern {S}ahel rainfall data are correlated with {SST}s from different regions of the {A}tlantic {O}cean, especially in the {N}orth and tropical {S}outh {A}tlantic. {A}s determined by wavelet coherence and phase, in-phase relationship with {N}orth {A}tlantic {SST}s only occurs in wet periods and at the multi- and quasi-decadal scales. {T}his teleconnection depends on the time period and the time scale, displaying a {NW}-{SE} pattern, which suggests nonuniform modulations of meridional displacements of the {I}ntertropical {C}onvergence {Z}one ({ITCZ}). {T}ropical {S}outh {A}tlantic {SST} variability is often related to opposite patterns between the {G}ulf of {G}uinean {C}oast (in phase) and {S}ahel region (out of phase).}, keywords = {{SENEGAL} ; {MALI} ; {NIGER} ; {SAHEL} ; {ATLANTIQUE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{T}heoretical and {A}pplied {C}limatology}, volume = {121}, numero = {1-2}, pages = {139--155}, ISSN = {0177-798{X}}, year = {2015}, DOI = {10.1007/s00704-014-1229-5}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010064761}, }
