@article{fdi:010064705, title = {{I}dentification and prevalence of coral diseases on three {W}estern {I}ndian {O}cean coral reefs}, author = {{S}ere, {M}. {G}. and {C}habanet, {P}ascale and {T}urquet, {J}. and {Q}uod, {J}. {P}. and {S}chleyer, {M}. {H}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{C}oral diseases have caused a substantial decline in the biodiversity and abundance of reef-building corals. {T}o date, more than 30 distinct diseases of scleractinian corals have been reported, which cause progressive tissue loss and/or affect coral growth, reproductive capacity, recruitment, species diversity and the abundance of reef-associated organisms. {W}hile coral disease research has increased over the last 4 decades, very little is known about coral diseases in the {W}estern {I}ndian {O}cean. {S}urveys conducted at multiple sites in {R}eunion, {S}outh {A}frica and {M}ayotte between {A}ugust 2010 and {J}une 2012 revealed the presence of 6 main coral diseases: black band disease ({BBD}), white syndrome ({WS}), pink line syndrome ({PLS}), growth anomalies ({GA}), skeleton eroding band ({SEB}) and {P}orites white patch syndrome ({PWPS}). {O}verall, disease prevalence was higher in {R}eunion (7.5 +/- 2.2%; mean +/- {SE}) compared to {S}outh {A}frica (3.9 +/- 0.8%) and {M}ayotte (2.7 +/- 0.3%). {A}cross locations, {A}cropora and {P}orites were the genera most susceptible to disease. {S}patial variability was detected in both {R}eunion and {S}outh {A}frica, with {BBD} and {WS} more prevalent on shallow than deep reefs. {T}here was also evidence of seasonality in 2 diseases: the prevalence of {BBD} and {WS} was higher in summer than winter. {T}his was the first study to investigate the ecology of coral diseases, providing both qualitative and quantitative data, on {W}estern {I}ndian {O}cean reefs, and surveys should be expanded to confirm these patterns.}, keywords = {{C}oral diseases ; {W}estern {I}ndian {O}cean ; {S}cleractinian corals ; {S}easonality ; {S}patial variability ; {OCEAN} {INDIEN} ; {REUNION} ; {MAYOTTE} ; {AFRIQUE} {DU} {SUD}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{D}iseases of {A}quatic {O}rganisms}, volume = {114}, numero = {3}, pages = {249--261}, ISSN = {0177-5103}, year = {2015}, DOI = {10.3354/dao02865}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010064705}, }
