@article{fdi:010064701, title = {{N}o evidence for ape plasmodium infections in humans in {G}abon}, author = {{D}elicat-{L}oembet, {L}. and {R}ougeron, {V}. and {O}llomo, {B}. and {A}rnathau, {C}. and {R}oche, {B}enjamin and {E}lguero, {E}ric and {M}oukodoum, {N}. {D}. and {O}kougha, {A}. {P}. and {O}ndo, {B}. {M}. and {B}oundenga, {L}. and {H}ouze, {S}. and {G}alan, {M}. and {N}koghe, {D}. and {L}eroy, {E}ric and {D}urand, {P}. and {P}aupy, {C}hristophe and {R}enaud, {F}. and {P}rugnolle, {F}ranck}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{A}frican great apes are naturally infected by a multitude of {P}lasmodium species most of them recently discovered, among which several are closely related to human malaria agents. {H}owever, it is still unknown whether these animals can serve as source of infections for humans living in their vicinity. {T}o evaluate this possibility, we analysed the nature of {P}lasmodium infections from a bank of 4281 human blood samples collected in 210 villages of {G}abon, {C}entral {A}frica. {A}mong them, 2255 were detected positive to {P}lasmodium using molecular methods ({P}lasmodium {C}ytochrome b amplification). {A} high throughput sequencing technology (454 {GS}-{FLX} {T}itanium technology, {R}oche) was then used to identify the {P}lasmodium species present within each positive sample. {O}verall, we identified with confidence only three species infecting humans in {G}abon: {P}. falciparum, {P}. malariae and {P}. ovale. {N}one of the species known to infect non-human primates in {C}entral {A}frica was found. {O}ur study shows that ape {P}lasmodium parasites of the subgenus {L}averania do not constitute a frequent source of infection for humans. {I}t also suggests that some strong host genetic barriers must exist to prevent the cross species transmission of ape {P}lasmodium in a context of ever increasing contacts between humans and wildlife.}, keywords = {{GABON}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{P}los {O}ne}, volume = {10}, numero = {6}, pages = {art. e0126933 [15 ]}, ISSN = {1932-6203}, year = {2015}, DOI = {10.1371/journal.pone.0126933}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010064701}, }
