@article{fdi:010064694, title = {{T}he historical (218 +/- 14 a{BP}) explosive eruption of {T}utupaca volcano ({S}outhern {P}eru)}, author = {{S}amaniego, {P}ablo and {V}alderrama, {P}. and {M}arino, {J}. and de {V}ries, {B}. {V}. and {R}oche, {O}livier and {M}anrique, {N}. and {C}hedeville, {C}. and {L}iorzou, {C}. and {F}idel, {L}. and {M}alnati, {J}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he little known {T}utupaca volcano (17 degrees 01' {S}, 70 degrees 21' {W}), located at the southern end of the {P}eruvian arc, is a dacitic dome complex that experienced a large explosive eruption during historical times. {B}ased on historic chronicles and our radiometric data, this eruption occurred 218 +/- 14 a{BP}, probably between 1787 and 1802 {AD}. {T}his eruption was characterised by a large sector collapse that triggered a small debris avalanche (<1 km(3)) and an associated pyroclastic eruption whose bulk volume was 6.5-7.5x10(7) m(3). {B}oth units were emplaced synchronously and spread onto the plain situated to the northeast of {T}utupaca volcano. {T}he spatial and temporal relationship between the debris avalanche and the pyroclastic density current deposits, coupled with the petrological similarity between the juvenile fragments in the debris avalanche, the pyroclastic density current deposits and the pre-avalanche domes, indicates that juvenile magma was involved in the sector collapse. {L}arge amounts of hydrothermally altered material are also found in the avalanche deposit. {T}hus, the ascent of a dacitic magma, coupled with the fact that the {T}utupaca dome complex was constructed on top of an older, altered volcanic sequence, probably induced the destabilisation of the hydrothermally active edifice, producing the debris avalanche and its related pyroclastic density currents. {T}his eruption probably represents the youngest debris avalanche in the {A}ndes and was accompanied by one of the larger explosive events to have occurred in {S}outhern {P}eru during historical times.}, keywords = {{T}utupaca ; {P}eru ; {C}entral {A}ndes ; {E}xplosive activity ; {S}ector collapse ; {V}olcanic hazards ; {H}istorical activity ; {PEROU} ; {ANDES}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{B}ulletin of {V}olcanology}, volume = {77}, numero = {6}, pages = {art. 51 [18 p.]}, ISSN = {0258-8900}, year = {2015}, DOI = {10.1007/s00445-015-0937-8}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010064694}, }
