@article{fdi:010064626, title = {{T}imothy {J}. {M}otley (4 {J}une 1965-28 {M}arch 2013) and his passion for ethnobotany and {P}acific {I}slands flora}, author = {{D}elprete, {P}iero}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}imothy {J}ay {M}otley was born {J}une 4th, 1965, to {R}oy and {J}oan (nee {S}chaeffer) {M}otley, in {P}axton, {I}llinois, {USA}. {H}e grew up on a farm in east-central {I}llinois, and attended {A}rmstrong-{E}llis {G}rade {S}chool. {H}e entered {E}astern {I}llinois {U}niversity in {C}harleston, {I}llinois, where he completed a {B}achelor of {S}cience in 1987 and a {M}aster of {S}cience in {B}otany in 1989, having written a dissertation on {S}weet {F}lag ({A}corus calamus). {I}n 1996 he earned a {P}h.{D}. in {B}otany at the {U}niversity of {H}awaii, {M}anoa; his dissertation on evolutionary and reproductive biology of {L}abordia ({L}oganiaceae). {W}hile in {H}awaii, he developed a particular interest for the {P}acific islands flora and for ethnobotany, two passions that he pursued for the rest of his life. {S}hortly after finishing his doctorate, he worked at {T}he {N}ew {Y}ork {B}otanical {G}arden ({NYBG}) as {P}ost-{D}octoral {R}esearch {A}ssociate (1997-1998), {A}ssistant {C}urator (1998-2004), {A}cting {C}hair (1999-2000; 2001-2002), and {P}roject {H}ead of {C}onservation {G}enetics in {I}sland {S}ystems (1998-2006) in the {L}ewis {B}. and {D}orothy {C}ullman {P}rogram for {M}olecular {S}ystematics {S}tudies. {W}hile working for {NYBG}, he travelled widely in regions where his projects would take him, mostly in the {S}outh {P}acific, and visited the {K}ingdom of {T}onga, {R}apa {I}ti, {B}ora {B}ora, {P}apua {N}ew {G}uinea, {G}uam, {P}ohnpei, {F}iji, {M}auritius, {R}eunion, {V}anuatu, {P}hilippines, {J}amaica, {N}ew {Z}ealand, {N}ew {C}aledonia, {H}awaii, and {T}ahiti. {I}n 2006, he was hired as the {J}. {R}obert {S}tiffler {D}istinguished {P}rofessor of {B}otany and {A}ssociate {P}rofessor in the {D}epartment of {B}iological {S}ciences, {O}ld {D}ominion {U}niversity, and as the {D}irector of {S}cience at the {N}orfolk {B}otanical {G}arden, {N}orfolk, {V}irginia. {D}uring this period, he continued his expeditions to study and collect plants in the {S}outh {P}acific and beyond, including {E}cuador, the {G}alapagos {A}rchipelago, {S}ingapore, {B}runei {D}arussalam, {M}exico, the {L}ouisiade {A}rchipelago, and yearly field trips to underexplored regions of {C}hina. {S}adly, after suffering a sudden cardiac arrest, he passed away on {M}arch 28, 2013, at age 47, at the peak of his career, leaving his wife, young son, and numerous colleagues and friends. {H}is numerous ongoing projects, which are currently being continued by his graduate students and colleagues around the world, assure that his scientific legacy, his loving character, and his integrity will never be forgotten.}, keywords = {{P}lant systematics ; molecular phylogenies ; {H}edyotis ; {L}abordia ; {R}ubiaceae ; {S}permacoceae ; {L}oganiaceae ; {H}awaii ; {R}apa {I}ti ; {A}ustral {I}slands ; {PACIFIQUE} {ILES} ; {AUSTRALES} {ILES} ; {HAWAII} ; {RAPA}}, booktitle = {{F}estschrift volume dedicated to {T}imothy {M}otley (1966–2013)}, journal = {{P}hytotaxa}, volume = {206}, numero = {1 (no sp{\'e}cial)}, pages = {5--13}, ISSN = {1179-3155}, year = {2015}, DOI = {10.11646/phytotaxa.206.1.3}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010064626}, }
