@article{fdi:010064216, title = {{D}etecting natural hybridization between two vulnerable {A}ndean pupfishes ({O}restias agassizii and {O}. luteus) representative of the {A}ltiplano endemic fisheries}, author = {{E}squer-{G}arrigos, {Y}. and {H}ugueny, {B}ernard and {I}banez, {C}. and {Z}epita, {C}. and {K}oerner, {K}. and {L}ambourdiere, {J}. and {C}ouloux, {A}. and {G}aubert, {P}hilippe}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he detection of hybridization among freshwater fish species is of main concern for conservation programs and fish farming. {W}e assessed the incidence of natural hybridization between two vulnerable species of {A}ndean pupfishes ({C}yprinodontidae; {O}restias agassizii and {O}. luteus) that represent an important component of local fisheries. {W}e combined mitochondrial and nuclear {DNA} sequencing, microsatellites genotyping and morphometrics to characterize hybridization patterns between the two species in lakes {T}iticaca and {U}ru {U}ru ({N} = 175). {T}he clustering analysis of 10 microsatellite loci together with heterozygosity distribution at seven species-specific diagnostic sites in rhodopsin (nuclear {DNA}) proved to be a robust diagnostic tool to detect {F}1 and potential backcross hybrids. {F}or the first time on a genetic basis, we confirmed the incidence of natural hybridization between the two {A}ndean pupfishes, at frequency rates reaching almost 10 %. {T}he morphological intermediacy criterion (relative to parental species) did not apply in hybrids, since the latter (i) deviated through their larger caudal peduncle height, and (ii) had greater, overlapping ranges in their morphometric ratios. {A}lthough viable {F}1 and {F}2 hybrids between {O}. agassizii and {O}. luteus had been reported under controlled conditions, the ecological and/or demographic factors facilitating interspecific gene flow in the wild remain speculative. {W}e recommend that regional fish farming and restocking programs targeting {O}. agassizii and {O}. luteus call on the genetic diagnosis of hybrids to avoid the potentially deleterious impacts of releasing hybrid populations in the wild.}, keywords = {{A}ndean pupfishes ; {C}onservation genetics ; {H}ybridization ; {M}orphology ; {O}restias agassizii ; {O}restias luteus ; {ANDES} ; {TITICACA} {LAC} ; {ZONE} {DE} {MONTAGNE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{C}onservation {G}enetics}, volume = {16}, numero = {3}, pages = {717--727}, ISSN = {1566-0621}, year = {2015}, DOI = {10.1007/s10592-015-0695-3}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010064216}, }
