@article{fdi:010064196, title = {{H}eight, zinc and soil-transmitted helminth infections in schoolchildren : a study in {C}uba and {C}ambodia}, author = {de {G}ier, {B}. and {M}pabanzi, {L}. and {V}ereecken, {K}. and van der {W}erff, {S}. {D}. and {D}'{H}aese, {P}. {C}. and {F}iorentino, {M}. and {K}hov, {K}. and {P}erignon, {M}arl{\`e}ne and {C}hamnan, {C}. and {B}erger, {J}acques and {P}arker, {M}. {E}. and {D}iaz, {R}. {J}. and {N}unez, {F}. {A}. and {R}ivero, {L}. {R}. and {G}orbea, {M}. {B}. and {D}oak, {C}. {M}. and {P}once, {M}. {C}. and {W}ieringa, {F}ranck and {P}olman, {K}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{S}oil-transmitted helminth ({STH}) infections and zinc deficiency are often found in low- and middle-income countries and are both known to affect child growth. {H}owever, studies combining data on zinc and {STH} are lacking. {I}n two studies in schoolchildren in {C}uba and {C}ambodia, we collected data on height, {STH} infection and zinc concentration in either plasma ({C}ambodia) or hair ({C}uba). {W}e analyzed whether {STH} and/or zinc were associated with height for age z-scores and whether {STH} and zinc were associated. {I}n {C}uba, {STH} prevalence was 8.4%; these were mainly {A}scaris lumbricoides and {T}richuris trichiura infections. {I}n {C}ambodia, {STH} prevalence was 16.8%, mostly caused by hookworm. {I}n {C}uban children, {STH} infection had a strong association with height for age (a{B}-0.438, p = 0.001), while hair zinc was significantly associated with height for age only in {STH} uninfected children. {I}n {C}ambodian children, plasma zinc was associated with height for age (a{B}-0.033, p = 0.029), but {STH} infection was not. {O}nly in {C}ambodia, {STH} infection showed an association with zinc concentration (a{B}-0.233, p = 0.051). {F}actors influencing child growth differ between populations and may depend on prevalences of {STH} species and zinc deficiency. {F}urther research is needed to elucidate these relationships and their underlying mechanisms.}, keywords = {{CUBA} ; {CAMBODGE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{N}utrients}, volume = {7}, numero = {4}, pages = {3000--3010}, ISSN = {2072-6643}, year = {2015}, DOI = {10.3390/nu7043000}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010064196}, }
