@article{fdi:010064147, title = {{I}nfluence of plant silicon in {B}usseola fusca ({L}epidoptera : {N}octuidae) larvae - {P}oaceae interactions}, author = {{J}uma, {G}. and {A}huya, {P}. {O}. and {O}ng'amo, {G}. and {L}e {R}ΓΌ, {B}runo and {M}agoma, {G}. and {S}ilvain, {J}ean-{F}ran{\c{c}}ois and {C}alatayud, {P}aul-{A}ndr{\'e}}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he noctuid stem borer {B}usseola fusca is an important pest of maize and sorghum in {S}ub-{S}aharan {A}frica. {T}he presence of this species occurred mostly on cultivated than on wild habitats. {B}usseola fusca is oligophagous having a narrow range of a wild grass species. {T}his might be due, in part, to differences in silicon ({S}i) content in plant tissues between cultivated and wild grasses. {I}n the present study, we have tested this hypothesis by studying the survival and the relative growth rate ({RGR}) expressed as daily weight gains of {B}. fusca larvae on maize and six wild host plants, mostly present in the natural habitat where {B}. fusca occurred, and correlated with their {S}i contents. {S}urvival and {RGR} of {B}. fusca larvae were considerably higher on maize and wild sorghum than on the other grass species, and they were negatively related to plant {S}i content. {T}his was corroborated with results on {RGR} from artificial diets amended with increasing levels of {S}i. {I}n addition, if {S}i was added to maize growing substrate {B}. fusca larval growth was significantly reduced confirming the involvement of {S}i in {B}. fusca larvae - {P}oaceae interactions. {T}he results provide insight into the possible mechanisms of oligophagy of {B}. fusca and provide a correlative support for a physical role of plant endogenous {S}i in impeding feeding of {B}. fusca larvae.}, keywords = {{A}frica ; stemborer ; {P}oaceae ; wild grasses ; {AFRIQUE} {SUBSAHARIENNE} ; {KENYA}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{B}ulletin of {E}ntomological {R}esearch}, volume = {105}, numero = {2}, pages = {253--258}, ISSN = {0007-4853}, year = {2015}, DOI = {10.1017/s000748531500005x}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010064147}, }
