@article{fdi:010064132, title = {{E}volutionary history of {L}eishmania killicki (synonymous {L}eishmania tropica) and taxonomic implications}, author = {{C}haara, {D}. and {R}avel, {C}. and {B}anuls, {A}nne-{L}aure and {H}aouas, {N}. and {L}ami, {P}. and {T}alignani, {L}. and {E}l {B}aidouri, {F}. and {J}aouadi, {K}. and {H}arrat, {Z}. and {D}edet, {J}. {P}. and {B}abba, {H}. and {P}ratlong, {F}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{B}ackground: {T}he taxonomic status of {L}eishmania ({L}.) killicki, a parasite that causes chronic cutaneous leishmaniasis, is not well defined yet. {I}ndeed, some researchers suggested that this taxon could be included in the {L}. tropica complex, whereas others considered it as a distinct phylogenetic complex. {T}o try to solve this taxonomic issue we carried out a detailed study on the evolutionary history of {L}. killicki relative to {L}. tropica. {M}ethods: {T}hirty-five {L}. killicki and 25 {L}. tropica strains isolated from humans and originating from several countries were characterized using the {M}ulti{L}ocus {E}nzyme {E}lectrophoresis ({MLEE}) and the {M}ulti{L}ocus {S}equence {T}yping ({MLST}) approaches. {R}esults: {T}he results of the genetic and phylogenetic analyses strongly support the hypothesis that {L}. killicki belongs to the {L}. tropica complex. {O}ur data suggest that {L}. killicki emerged from a single founder event and that it evolved independently from {L}. tropica. {H}owever, they do not validate the hypothesis that {L}. killicki is a distinct complex. {T}herefore, we suggest naming this taxon {L}. killicki (synonymous {L}. tropica) until further epidemiological and phylogenetic studies justify the {L}. killicki denomination. {C}onclusions: {T}his study provides taxonomic and phylogenetic information on {L}. killicki and improves our knowledge on the evolutionary history of this taxon.}, keywords = {{L}eishmania killicki ; {L}eishmania tropica ; {E}volutionary history ; {P}hylogeny ; {I}soenzymatic polymorphism ; {ALGERIE} ; {TUNISIE} ; {GRECE} ; {ISRAEL} ; {JORDANIE} ; {KENYA} ; {YEMEN} ; {LYBIE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{P}arasites and {V}ectors}, volume = {8}, numero = {}, pages = {art. 198 [9 p.]}, ISSN = {1756-3305}, year = {2015}, DOI = {10.1186/s13071-015-0821-6}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010064132}, }
