  abstract = {{T}o support decisions relating to the use and conservation of protected areas and surrounds, the {EU}-funded {BIO}diversity multi-{SO}urce monitoring {S}ystem: from {S}pace {TO} {S}pecies ({BIO}_{SOS}) project has developed the {E}arth {O}bservation {D}ata for {HA}bitat {M}onitoring ({EODH}a{M}) system for consistent mapping and monitoring of biodiversity. {T}he {EODH}a{M} approach has adopted the {F}ood and {A}griculture {O}rganization {L}and {C}over {C}lassification {S}ystem ({LCCS}) taxonomy and translates mapped classes to {G}eneral {H}abitat {C}ategories ({GHC}s) from which {A}nnex {I} habitats ({EU} {H}abitats {D}irective) can be defined. {T}he {EODH}a{M} system uses a combination of pixel and object-based procedures. {T}he 1st and 2nd stages use earth observation ({EO}) data alone with expert knowledge to generate classes according to the {LCCS} taxonomy ({L}evels 1 to 3 and beyond). {T}he 3rd stage translates the final {LCCS} classes into {GHC}s from which {A}nnex {I} habitat type maps are derived. {A}n additional module quantifies changes in the {LCCS} classes and their components, indices derived from earth observation, object sizes and dimensions and the translated habitat maps (i.e., {GHC}s or {A}nnex {I}). {E}xamples are provided of the application of {EODH}a{M} system elements to protected sites and their surrounds in {I}taly, {W}ales ({UK}), the {N}etherlands, {G}reece, {P}ortugal and {I}ndia.},
