@article{fdi:010063962, title = {{G}eophysical evidence for a transform margin offshore {W}estern {A}lgeria : a witness of a subduction-transform edge propagator ?}, author = {{B}adji, {R}. and {C}harvis, {P}hilippe and {B}racene, {R}. and {G}alve, {A}. and {B}adsi, {M}. and {R}ibodetti, {A}lessandra and {B}enaissa, {Z}. and {K}lingelhoefer, {F}. and {M}edaouri, {M}. and {B}eslier, {M}. {O}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{F}or the first time, a deep seismic data set acquired in the frame of the {A}lgerian-{F}rench {SPIRAL} program provides new insights regarding the origin of the westernmost {A}lgerian margin and basin. {W}e performed a tomographic inversion of traveltimes along a 100-km-long wide-angle seismic profile shot over 40 ocean bottom seismometers offshore {M}ostaganem ({N}orthwestern {A}lgeria). {T}he resulting velocity model and multichannel seismic reflection profiles show a thin (3-4 km thick) oceanic crust. {T}he narrow ocean-continent transition (less than 10 km wide) is bounded by vertical faults and surmounted by a narrow almost continuous basin filled with {M}iocene to {Q}uaternary sediments. {T}his fault system, as well as the faults organized in a negative-flower structure on the continent side, marks a major strike-slip fault system. {T}he extremely sharp variation of the {M}oho depth (up to 45 +/- 3 degrees) beneath the continental border underscores the absence of continental extension in this area. {A}ll these features support the hypothesis that this part of the margin from {O}ran to {T}enes, trending {N}65-{N}70 degrees {E}, is a fossil subduction-transform edge propagator fault, vestige of the propagation of the edge of the {G}ibraltar subduction zone during the westward migration of the {A}lboran domain.}, keywords = {{S}eismic tomography ; {C}ontinental margins: transform ; {C}rustal structure ; {A}frica ; {E}urope ; {EUROPE} ; {AFRIQUE} ; {ALGERIE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{G}eophysical {J}ournal {I}nternational}, volume = {200}, numero = {2}, pages = {1027--1043}, ISSN = {0956-540{X}}, year = {2015}, DOI = {10.1093/gji/ggu454}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010063962}, }
