@article{fdi:010063721, title = {{I}mported loiasis in {I}taly : an analysis of 100 cases}, author = {{G}obbi, {F}. and {P}ostiglione, {C}. and {A}ngheben, {A}. and {M}arocco, {S}. and {M}onteiro, {G}. and {B}uonfrate, {D}. and {M}ascarello, {M}. and {G}obbo, {M}. and {B}oussinesq, {M}ichel and {B}isoffi, {Z}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{B}ackground: loiasis is a neglected filariasis, affecting millions of individuals living in the rainforest areas of {W}est and {C}entral {A}frica. {A}im of this study was to compare clinical and parasitological manifestations of loiasis between subjects born in endemic areas and expatriates/travelers. {M}ethods: we report clinical and parasitological manifestations of 100 patients with imported loiasis seen between 1993 and 2013 at the {C}enter of {T}ropical {D}iseases, {N}egrar, {I}taly. {R}esults: among the 100 patients, 30 were {A}frican immigrants, 70 were {E}uropeans (59 long-term expatriates and 11 travelers). {T}hirty-five patients (19 {A}fricans and 16 {E}uropeans) had positive microfilaremia. {C}alabar swellings were twice as frequent in {E}uropeans (90%) than in {A}fricans (46.7%), while a history of "eyeworm" was recorded in a higher proportion of {A}fricans (43.3%) than in {E}uropeans (17.4%). {T}he median duration of exposure in the non-endemic group was also fairly long (14.6 years). {D}ifferent drug regimens were used for treatment. {C}onclusions: we suggest that the differences between {A}fricans and {E}uropeans are more likely to be related to genetic differences, rather than to chronicity. {M}oreover the management of imported loiasis needs standardization.}, keywords = {{L}oiasis ; {T}ravel ; {I}mported ; {N}eglected ; {T}reatment ; {ITALIE} ; {EUROPE} ; {AFRIQUE} {CENTRALE} ; {AFRIQUE} {D} {L}'{OUEST}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{T}ravel {M}edicine and {I}nfectious {D}isease}, volume = {12}, numero = {6}, pages = {713--717}, ISSN = {1477-8939}, year = {2014}, DOI = {10.1016/j.tmaid.2014.07.004}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010063721}, }
