@article{fdi:010063688, title = {{S}ource area and seasonal {S}r-87/{S}r-86 variations in rivers of the {A}mazon basin}, author = {{S}antos, {R}. {V}. and {S}ondag, {F}rancis and {C}ochonneau, {G}{\'e}rard and {L}agane, {C}. and {B}runet, {P}. and {H}attingh, {K}. and {C}haves, {J}. {G}. {S}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{W}e report the results of a detailed study of dissolved {S}r isotopes in the {S}olimoes and {B}eni-{M}adeira {R}ivers of the {A}mazon basin. {T}his study developed data collected over 8years indicating large spatial and temporal variations in dissolved {S}r isotopes among the rivers of the {A}mazon basin. {T}he large {S}r-87/{S}r-86 variations were found to be correlated with the geology of the source areas of the suspended sediments. {T}he {B}eni-{M}adeira {R}iver displays a high average {S}r-87/{S}r-86 ratio and large {S}r-87/{S}r-86 fluctuations during the hydrological cycle. {T}his large average value and fluctuations were related to the presence of {P}recambrian rocks and {O}rdovician sediments in the source area of the suspended sediment of the river. {I}n contrast, the {S}olimoes {R}iver displays a narrow range of {S}r isotope ratio variations and an average value close to 0.709. {T}his river drains mostly {P}hanerozoic rocks of northern {P}eru and {E}cuador that are characterized by low {S}r isotope ratios. {T}he isotopic fluctuations in the {B}eni-{M}adeira {R}iver were observed to propagate downstream at least as far as bidos. {T}his signal is characterized by an inverse relationship between the concentration of elemental {S}r and its isotopic ratios. {W}e further demonstrate that the {S}r isotopic composition and content in the {B}eni-{M}adeira {R}iver is controlled by suspended sediments derived from the {A}ndes. {D}espite draining areas underlain by {P}recambrian rocks and having high {S}r-87/{S}r-86 ratios, such rivers as the {N}egro and {T}apajos play a minor role in the total {S}r budget of the {A}mazon basin.}, keywords = {{A}mazon basin ; dissolved strontium isotopes ; {A}mazon {R}iver ; seasonal variation ; erosion source rock ; {BOLIVIE} ; {BRESIL} ; {EQUATEUR} ; {PEROU} ; {ANDES} ; {AMAZONIE} ; {AMAZONE} {BASSIN}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{H}ydrological {P}rocesses}, volume = {29}, numero = {2}, pages = {187--197}, ISSN = {0885-6087}, year = {2015}, DOI = {10.1002/hyp.10131}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010063688}, }
